Thunderheart
We haven’t done Hubba at the Movies for a while. Here’s one of my favorites-
Thunderheart
Year: 1992
Director: Michael Apted
Starring: Val Kilmer, Sam Shepard, Graham Greene and “introducing Ted Thin Elk,” who stole the show.
Based on events that happened in South Dakota during the 1970’s and largely filmed in South Dakota, including several scenes in New Underwood.
An FBI agent with Native ancestry is called in by the agency to serve as a figurehead in a reservation murder case. The Natives, as they say, are not friendly.
This is one of my favorites because it accurately portrays how we live our daily lives (what we wear, how we talk.) Graham Greene gives a spectacular performance as Walter Crow Horse, the reservation cop, but he is eclipsed by Thin Elk, whose performance as a Lakota elder is delightful.
Quotable line: “Are you kidding? That’s a rock; these are Ray-Bans!”
Rating: One and a half thumbs up!
