The Wave
People in this part of the country are accustomed to waving at one another when they drive by, whether they are both mobile or one is on the ground. I have neighbors who get positively incensed if I don’t wave at them while they are standing in their yards. Because I only have one eye (for all practical purposes) my neighbors are often incensed.
But people in other parts of the country don’t wave. If I haven’t been to a large city for a while, I find myself waving at them as I pass them on the street. It’s ridiculous to wave at everyone on a city street, but I can’t help it for a day or two.
But this morning I really did it. Driving down the highway, I caught myself waving at a group of motorcyclists.
Just how are they going to wave back…

Is it acceptable to nod your head or essentially wave with your chin or hat brim? I sometimes do that if both hands are needed on the wheel or they come up on me fast.

It’s more acceptable to wave with your chin if you are Native American.
Out of courtesy, wasichus should probably use the “hat brim method” whenever possible.

regarding courtesy in the city: we midwesterners maybe don’t wave as much, but especially if you make eye contact, you acknowledge the person’s existance, and if you need help, you ask, politely.
two experiences from new haven, ct, then:
1) my buddy from chicago is walking down the sidewalk. guy’s walking from the other direction. their eyes happen to meet, so my friend gives that slight reverse nod and says, “hey” in passing. the response? “#@$% you!”
2) my dad came out to college to pick me up, but once he parked, he couldn’t remember how to get to my dorm. he saw a young woman on the sidewalk and said, “excuse me, miss.” she turned to see this tall bearded man in a broad felt hat and vest, and flattened herself against the nearest building like he might kill her. he’s lucky he didn’t get maced!
