The ESN; Good News/Bad News
In ways, it was a hell of a week in Elm Springs. The week began with a bang which woke the residents of the “Brustol AFB” in the Monday morning darkness. They hastily donned makeshift costumes to hurry outside and watch rather helplessly as their barn burned down, with several important pieces of equipment inside. The Elm Springs Fire Department couldn’t do much more than arrive on the scene. Thankfully, no men, women or beasts were harmed.
But something else happened later in the week which was much more happy. A real moisture system passed slowly over western South Dakota Thursday and Friday, leaving varying amounts of rain and snow. In Elm Springs it was about half and half, and when it was all done Grandma Jean Linn had 2.81 inches of moisture in the official gauge.
In addition to making the kind citizens very happy, the storm made travel difficult and care of stock a top priority, so the kind citizens didn’t get to party much.
As a rather humorous footnote, the kind citizens trouped dutifully through the Sunday slop to attend the Elm Springs Church for the designated Day of Prayer for Moisture.
Melissa Burke drove Lawrence to Rapid City and back Monday so that he could keep a medical appointment. On Wednesday, Lawrence planted a row of cedar trees in the scrappy new shelterbelt around the Elm Springs Fire Hall.
Clyde Arneson visited the Andy Linn residence (yes we’re that far down the list already) Wednesday afternoon. Matt Trask visited Saturday afternoon, and Cary Johnston and kids visited Sunday afternoon.
The Morris Linns spent Monday and Tuesday night in Rapid City. On Wednesday, Morris and Kassandra went to Wall, where they visited the Sanden Simons residence. On Thursday, Matt Trask visited the Morris Linn residence, while Shirrise and Cheryl Simons drove through the storm to return from Rapid City. Sunday afternoon the entire Simons clan, including Grandma Arlene Talley and Dayton Shannon, visited at the Morris Linn residence.
Jim and Myrna Smith, accompanied by Maxine Smith and Hazel Stadel of Isabel, went to Wall Sunday evening to attend the WHS Spring Play, “The Lady Pirates of the Carribean” in which Melanie Smith performed.
Matt Trask and Morris Linn visited the Cary Tines residence Saturday evening.
Julie Trask visited Al and Bridget’s Castle Friday night. Saturday, the Al Trasks went to Rapid City where they visited the Paul Yantes Jrs. The Yantes’ returned the favor Sunday afternoon, joining Ray Olson and most of the “Upland Trasks” at the Castle to finish the roof and have fun.
David Kalil and Jay Behrends of Rapid City, Al and Bridget Trask, and Steph Trask of Rapid City visited the “Upland Trask” residence Wednesday. Steph left Wednesday afternoon for Brookings, where she will have two weeks of training for her job with Dakota Rural Action. Pat and Austin Trask went to Rapid City Sunday night.
The “Elk Creek Trasks” attended the Phillip High School FFA Awards banquet Thursday night, where Mark, Mick and Tomilyn picked up several trophies.
Mary Kay Wilson left Thursday for the South Dakota Rest Area Tour, in preparation for the tourist season.
Philip Wilson accompanied Kenny and Janet Wilson to the WHS Spring Play mentioned above, in which Kelli Wilson also participated.
The kind citizens hope your grass grows fast!
