The Elm Springs News
October 14, 2007
Â
While much of southwestern South Dakota got one or two inches of rain over the weekend, the kind citizens had to be satisfied with around a quarter of an inch.
Most of the ESN this week is of the community, as opposed to the individual household, variety. We are going to list the events more or less in order of importance, and so they may not be in chronological order.
Long time kind citizen Eula Ferguson was laid to rest at the Elm Springs Cemetery Thursday afternoon. Almost all of the kind citizens attended either the burial and reception in Elm Springs or the funeral at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis or both.
And several of the kind citizens attended the Wall v. Philip football game in Wall Friday night. The game was roundly described by everyone as “the most exciting game of the season,” and easily could have gone either way, but it went to Wall, 22-20.
The Elm Springs People Who Play Cards met for the first court whist tournament of the season on Wednesday at the Jim and Caroline Wilsey residence. Several regular members had other obligations and had to call a substitute. Cary Johnston got the high score for the night, and Steph Trask, appearing as Sandy Fields, won the booby prize.
The Elm Springs schoolchildren, driven by Kellie Linn and Mrs. Terry Barry, went on a school trip to the band concert in Whitewood on Thursday.
And several of the kind citizens attended either the Wayne and Stacy White auction near Scenic, or the REA meeting in Wall on Saturday.
After that, there’s not much to report.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders joined the Sam Johnstons, the “Upland Trasks,” and Shirley and Chance Trask at the “Big Green Trask House” Friday night for a soup and pie supper.
Clyde Arneson, accompanied by niece Chrissy Elshere, went to “mostly Sturgis” Friday on business.
Lawrence Burke and Andy Linn started work on a fence around the young shelterbelt at the Elm Springs Fire Hall Wednesday.
Peggy Gravatt left Wednesday, and Larry left Thursday, for Denver CO, where they spent the rest of the week babysitting young Abigail Miller. They returned to Elm Springs Sunday night.
Andy and Kellie Linn went to Murdo Monday night to watch Ben play with the Wall junior high football team. Kellie and Emily Linn accompanied Cary and Carlee Johnston to the rural volleyball game in Faith on Saturday.
Kassandra Linn was a Tuesday afternoon visitor at the Ryan Elshere residence. Wednesday Shirrise and Kassandra went to Wall for piano lessons, while Morris Linn and Pat and Nick Trask attended a Legend Seeds meeting at the Red Rock Restaurant. Andy Linn was a Thursday morning coffee visitor at the Morris Linn residence. Clyde Arneson was a coffee guest Sunday morning, before Shirrise and Kassandra went to a stamp party in Enning. Matt Trask was a Sunday night supper guest at the Morris Linns, and Nick, Steph, Julie and John Paul visited Sunday night to watch a movie.
Philip Wilson visited the Jim Smith residence Sunday.
John Tines, Amanda Humphrey, and baby Lainee Mae visited the Cary Tines residence Wednesday night for supper. Lainee Mae stayed all night, and was returned Thursday. Clyde Arneson and Chrissy Elshere were Saturday morning coffee guests at the Cary Tines residence, and Lainee Mae returned to spend Saturday night.
The “Upland Trasks” made a few trips here and there, but nothing of particular note. Dunbar Anders was a Thursday night guest at the “Upland Trask” residecne and Tim Haggerty and Mike McDonald of Rapid City visited while grouse hunting Friday. Dr. Jim MacDougall and his girlfriend Amy visited Sunday afternoon.
Matt Trask was the guest of Dale and Mary Lewis of Wasta Thursday evening at the SD Historical Society’s opening night, which featured Shebby Lee, niece of Badger Clark, giving a presentation about her famous uncle. The Lewis’ were also brave enough to buy Matt supper. Matt spent Saturday night at the Rob and Andrea Goodman residence near Kyle to attend the Sunday baptism of young Clancy Willard Goodman in Kyle. Since he was there, the couple let Matt read a passage from the Good Book and pour the water into the baptismal font. He performed both of these tasks well enough to be invited back to the Goodman residence for the reception, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Philip and Mary Kay Wilson are proud to announce the arrival of grandson Samuel John Wolberg, who was born in Minneapolis, MN Wednesday morning to Josh and Amy Wolberg, weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces and measuring 21 and a half inches long. He joins big sister Mary. Grandma Mary Kay left Wednesday for Minneapolis to visit the family.
The Elm Springs Church will hold services Sunday, October 21st at 2 pm.
The kind citizens would like to offer their condolences to their mailman Freddy Ferguson on the passing of his mother.
