In Pictures; Movin’ Cows
Like most of the people in Western South Dakota, we had way more dry cows than we wanted to. A “dry cow” is one who doesn’t have a calf, so she has no milk. Slightly chauvinist perhaps, but that’s the way things are out here.
We decided to give quite a few of our dry cows a second chance, since arguably it wasn’t their fault that they lost a calf this year. So today Gemma, Carl and I got the dry cows in where they were sorted, “sellers” from “keepers.”
It somehow didn’t occur to me to take photographs until we were almost done, but here are Carl and I welcoming the “keepers” to their summer pasture.

- kicking the cows out of the corral
- I guess I had an itch in this one…
- out the gate…
- to their summer home…
