The Cowboys
The Cowboys
Year: 1972
Director: Mark Rydell
Starring: John Wayne, Bruce Dern, Slim Pickens, and a bunch of kids.
Wil Anderson (Wayne) needs to move cows to the railroad in Belle Fourche SD. All the adult cowboys are gone chasing gold, so Wil hires boys from the local school. Wil leaves for Belle Fourche, now having to herd kids as well as cows, in addition to dodging a gang of bad guys whose sensibilities he has offended. Includes the most well-known onscreen killing of John Wayne, which put a damper on the “killers” (Bruce Dern) career.
Quotable line: “You’re a hard man, Mr. Anderson.”
Rating: One and a half thumbs up!

One of the best westerns ever. Of course, the book was better.

I’ve never read the book, and I only learned about it today while researching the movie

Yeah I agree, the book is great but this is a rare instance, in my opinion, where the movie is just as good as the book! At least the boys remain virgins during the movie.
That whole scene between Nightlinger and the lady was done very tastefully!

I have this on a shelf somewhere — Jodi’s brother (who once wrote John Wayne’s birthday on his living room wall in permanent black magic marker — gave it to me awhile back, and I’m ashamed to say I haven’t watched it. Thanks for jogging my sluggish memory, Hubba!

“While I may have the inclination, and the wherewithal, unfortunately I do not have the time.”
Yes, very tastefully.

Like I said, the book was better!
I myself would have made the time. No sense hurting a ladies feelings!
