Ed’s Sear’s & Roebuck House
This is “Grandma’s House”-
Grandpa Mark and Grandma Winnie bought this house, along with a piece of ground, from a man named Ed Shoblom. Ed ordered the house out of the Sears & Roebuck catalog. It arrived in pieces by rail in Wasta in 1919. Ed hauled the pieces out by horse and wagon (there were virtually no roads through here then) and had it put together in 1920. Grandpa died in 1983, and Grandma died in 2004, but it’s still “Grandma’s House.”
I have mentioned the WTL Club on Hubba’s House before. The WTL Club is a women’s organization here in Elm Springs. I have never heard of another WTL Club anywhere in the world. The women say that WTL stands for “Willing To Learn,” and the running joke among the men is that it stands for “Women Tell Lies.”
Apparently that’s a long running joke. There is a picture of the WTL Club members sitting on the porch of Grandma’s house way back in 1927. Among the women are Ed Shoblom’s mother and sister.
Yesterday was Mom’s turn to host the WTL ladies and she decided to replicate the picture as closely as she could. Poor Mom wanted me to take the picture, and I would have, except that I had to go to Parkston. Sally Jo Cronin of Mud Butte ended up taking the picture, and she did a good job.
After they took the picture, the WTL ladies drank tea and played croquet. That Mom, she can throw a party!

Hey, Matt, 6-27-09
Well, even tho I am from the great state of Texas, I am now visiting the Big House up here in beautiful Elm Springs. I have enjoyed reading the news for several years and it has been alot of fun. I don’t know who everyone is but I do know some…mainly all the Linns. My husband is the youngest brother, Bob. Years ago I visited your grandma in the wonderful house you wrote about. I have never forgotten the feeling I had in that house. Old houses are my love and I was thrilled to be fortunate enough to enjoy an afternoon inside this beautiful house. Now that I am in SD I hope to get to meet you. I think you are a great writer. You really have a way with words and bring both valued info as well as humor to all who are lucky enough to read your news. Thanks for sharing the Elm Springs life with someone far away….Mary Linn
