Dan Johnson; 1950-Not Long Enough
Man we have been busy!
Brandings, cattle moving, getting ready for haying, weddings, graduations, and a funeral.
A very sad, very unexpected funeral.
Danny Johnson was 59 years young. His first granddaughter had just recently been born, he had recently tracked down and purchased the motorcycle his wife rode in high school. He enjoyed dirt bikes and muscle cars, keeping up with his children, and life. He had no plans to go anywhere.
Danny went Home last Friday, and his funeral was yesterday.
If a man can be judged by the number of friends he has, Danny stood right up there with Paul Bunyan. The guests, after filling all of the pews at the First Calvary Baptist Church and every available folding chair, sat on the floor in the hallway. The musical selections during the service included Marty Robbins’ version of “Strawberry Roan” and ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man,” accompanied by a slide show of Danny looking at times less than sharply dressed. Danny’s pastor, who had become a close personal friend had difficulty keeping himself composed during the service.
After the burial, we all went to the reception, where I saw cousins I hadn’t seen in years. It is unfortunate that something like this has to happen to get us all together.
Some of the family had to leave yesterday afternoon, while some could stay for a few days. Two of Danny’s boys have a rugby match in Denver in a few days, which will be attended by their mom and sister, and most likely, a conspicuously empty chair.
I bet they kick some ass for their dad.
