Big Dan

We headed off to the barn, with Joe visibly limping again.  The Big Dumb Horse had lamed the cowboy.  I wondered if he was going to spend the night in the far corner of the house.

This seemed to be the routine on the Johnston ranch.  About once a week, Joe would get us in and catch one of us to get something in, or just check the cows.  Lee had ridden a lot more, but he didn’t have any farming to do, and he didn’t put up much hay.

Gall and Cessna were even worse when Joe was trying to catch one of them.  I couldn’t figure out why he kept those two around.  They would tear around the corral, running into the rest of us, and Joe usually ended up sorting them off into a smaller pen to catch either one of them.  If it was only him riding, he had way too many horses. Big Dan; My First Job

We loped over the hill, and then Joe slowed me up.  The cows were spread out all around us in the pasture.  A few calves broke and ran when we appeared, and all the cows in the area started bawling.  I walked through the rest of the herd, past the tire feeders and around the little dam.

We kept right on going through the whole bunch.  I had seen a few bulls, but they were with the cows and weren’t lame.  We found the one we were after in the far corner of the pasture, over the next rise. (more…)

Big Dan; A Small Misunderstanding

I wasn’t sure, but I had a feeling Joe wanted “Fancypants”…

Sure enough, Joe was walking toward me.  I didn’t mind, at least not as much as this collection of crazies I was with seemed to.  I was a saddle-horse after all.

But I had always thought that any self respecting horse should make an attempt to avoid capture, so I began to shuffle this way and that across the corral, and even broke into a trot once.  Gall was the blocking horse in this bunch, and even though he didn’t like me, he performed his needless duty well, getting in Joe’s way twice.  The second time Gall blocked Joe, he started getting mad, so I stopped and faced him. Big Dan; Chapter 2

It was about three days after Lee came for the hay that Joe let me and Pepper out of the corral into the horse pasture.  At least I figured it was the “horse pasture,” because there were horses in it.

I had become acquainted with the other horses, at least by sight, over the corral fence.  Pepper was not very talkative, and he had not offered any of their names.  Most of them had touched noses over the fence and run away without offering names themselves. (more…)

Big Dan; Sold

Authors note: Circumstances force me to cut this week’s installment a bit short.  I have also decided that this is more or less the end of Chapter 1, as it were.

Had I been in a better mood, I would have found the Pepper the pony amusing, but I was not in a better mood.  At the same time, I didn’t want to interact with anyone, man or animal, especially in a strange corral in the dark (more…)
