That’s My Godson!
Matthew Heathershaw competed in the mutton bustin’ Thursday at the Central States Fair, and won. He gets to compete in the short go on Sunday.
I feel bad because I completely forgot his birthday this year, the first time I had. This is a pitiful attempt at making it up to him.
As you can see by the pictures, the rules aren’t quite the same for mutton bustin’ as they are for the adult roughstock events. Anything short of tying your legs together underneath is permissible, and the last time I saw one, if the contestants were so much as still touching the animal when the whistle blew, they got a score (more…)

The New Deal
I suppose it was inevitable.
Last Saturday, on a whim I went to Borders Bookstore where former Senator George McGovern was speaking and signing copies of his book, Abraham Lincoln. I took along my video camera in the hopes of scoring an interview with the man.
I approached the interview as an interview with a (whether you agree with him or not) iconic South Dakotan, not as a politician. The discussion mostly centered around politics, because after all that is his sphere. I discussed politics with Mr. McGovern for the same reasons that I discussed horseshoes with Laramie Opstedahl. The Wave
People in this part of the country are accustomed to waving at one another when they drive by, whether they are both mobile or one is on the ground. I have neighbors who get positively incensed if I don’t wave at them while they are standing in their yards. Because I only have one eye (for all practical purposes) my neighbors are often incensed.
But people in other parts of the country don’t wave. If I haven’t been to a large city for a while, I find myself waving at them as I pass them on the street. It’s ridiculous to wave at everyone on a city street, but I can’t help it for a day or two.
But this morning I really did it. Driving down the highway, I caught myself waving at a group of motorcyclists.
Just how are they going to wave back…

ESN; Homecoming!
After several days of fall-like weather, Saturday and Sunday were roasty-toasty.
High School sports practice has begun, and several kind young citizens duly trudged off Monday, to begin the dreaded two-a-days.
The “Upland Trasks” hosted a GF&P/ landowner meeting and supper at their place Thursday night. Steve Griffin and Mike Kintigh of Rapid City and Matthew Talbot of New Underwood joined a host of kind citizens there.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders, accompanied by Dunbar, went to Rapid City on business Thursday. Sunday, Jay and Pam Livermont of Interior were guests at the Marvin Anders residence. (more…)

SD’s Elder Statesmen & Me
I had one more trail ride video, but this is way better.
Mr. George McGovern was in Rapid City today to sign copies of his book, Abraham Lincoln. On a whim, I just decided I’d go there and try and get an interview with him.
Now I have a lot of Republican readers I know, and McGovern is a Democrat. He’s also a genius, a wit, a humanitarian, and as I dubbed him in the video “South Dakota’s Greatest Democrat Export.”
I sure did have fun. Corey, Kevin and David, are you jealous?
Here he is, Mr. George McGovern!
