Ask a Ranch Wife on a Parts Run
Ok so this has been done to death, most notably at www.theonion.com, but who cares-
Dear Ranch Wife On a Parts Run;
My son entered junior high this year, and he has gained a few friends who could be a bad influence. One of them frequently skips school and has been rumored to use drugs.
My son is a very compassionate person, and he tells me these kids really need a friend. (more…)

The ESN; Wedding Bells & Echoes
On Friday afternoon, a huge ferocious looking thunderstorm toenailed across Elm Springs, leaving .60 inches of rain at the “Big House” and 2 inches at the Lynn and Sandy Fields residence.
Several of the kind citizens attended the ordination of Father Tyler Dennis at the Cathedral in Rapid City Friday night.
And several of the kind cititzens (perhaps mostly women) attended Beth Wilson’s bridal shower at the Elm Springs Fire Hall Saturday morning.
The WTL Club met at the “Upland Trask” residence Wednesday afternoon, where they took great pains to faithfully recreate a photograph of the 1927 WTL Club sitting on the back porch of what was then the Ed Shoblom house, which was later bought by Mark and Winnie Trask. (more…)

A Long Road
Last night I attended my buddy Tyler Dennis’ ordination to the priesthood.
The Catholic view of an ordination is essentially that the priest is marrying the Church, the Bride of Christ so to speak. And Tyler (now Father Tyler) looked the part of the groom, beaming from ear to ear.

Ed’s Sear’s & Roebuck House
This is “Grandma’s House”-
Grandpa Mark and Grandma Winnie bought this house, along with a piece of ground, from a man named Ed Shoblom. Ed ordered the house out of the Sears & Roebuck catalog. It arrived in pieces by rail in Wasta in 1919. Ed hauled the pieces out by horse and wagon (there were virtually no roads through here then) and had it put together in 1920. Grandpa died in 1983, and Grandma died in 2004, but it’s still “Grandma’s House.” (more…)

Horses I’ve Rode; Buster
Buster was actually a hell of a good horse. When he sold at Melvin Anderson’s horse auction, much to my chagrin he sold for way more than I could afford to pay for him.
Buster (that’s what Melvin had named him) was good-lookin’ too, is part of the reason he went so damn high at the auction. He was a big sorrel paint with a glass eye. He looked just like the horse Jackie Chan rode in Shanghai Noon, which of course is the only horse you’ve ever seen Jackie Chan ride.
Did I mention he was big? He was a gigantic saddlehorse. He must have stood 16 and a half hands and weighed somewhere over 1400 pounds. He was a big horse. (more…)
