Our Cup Runneth Over (And We Complain About The Runoff)
What a difference a year makes! One year ago, we in Western South Dakota were anxiously eyeing our last meager stockpiles of hay, doling it out in miserly fashion. We had endured seven years, more or less, of extreme drought, during which time our main concern was preventing and extinguishing fires. All of the churches had begun regular prayer services calling upon the Lord to send us rain, and even the agnostics and atheists among us had began to hedge their bets. We were getting desperate.
And I think, to borrow a biblical allegory or something, I think we “struck the rock twice.” (more…)

The ESN; Easter
The kind citizens only had to endure one snowstorm this week, that on Thursday. Although it was a small one, it’s effects were amplified by the moisture already on the ground. It is ironic that after seven years of drought, we are now ready for the rain to stop.
The Elm Springs Church had a surprisingly good attendance for it’s Good Friday service, and Easter Sunday services went as planned, with a potluck brunch afterwards. (more…)

At The Cross My Station Keeping
Yesterday was Good Friday, the most solemn and somber day in the Christian church year. It is the day when we commemorate Our Lord and Savior dying for our sins. Attendance at Good Friday services is not mandatory, but is encouraged. And the service itself is dark and somber, as it should be.
Of course human nature being what it is, the more solemn the occasion, the more we want to laugh about it.
And in the Catholic Church at least, on Good Friday there is plenty of opportunity for that. You see, the Gospel reading is the entire narrative of the Passion, voiced by four different (more…)

Big Dan; A Trio
The mornings were getting awfuly cool. Me and Crackerjack didn’t stand under the trees until afternoon anymore.
When I was given the chance to. Joe had been riding me a lot lately, and riding me a little hard at that. Everytime we went anywhere, Joe took the “big circle.” I was getting to know the country around here, and I had seen it all at a fast trot or a lope. The last week, I had been the “night horse” every night. My days started early and ended late, and I had become very familiar with the horse trailer.
I had been let out the night before and spent the day out in the horse pasture (more…)
