The Cowboys

The Cowboys

The Cowboys

Year: 1972

Director: Mark Rydell

Starring: John Wayne, Bruce Dern, Slim Pickens, and a bunch of kids.

Wil Anderson (Wayne) needs to move cows to the railroad in Belle Fourche SD.  All the adult cowboys are gone chasing gold, so Wil hires boys from the local school.  Wil leaves for Belle Fourche, now having to herd kids as well as cows, in addition to dodging a gang of bad guys whose sensibilities he has offended.  Includes the most well-known onscreen killing of John Wayne, which put a damper on the “killers” (Bruce Dern) career.

Quotable line: “You’re a hard man, Mr. Anderson.”

Rating: One and a half thumbs up!

An Important Anouncement from Hubba’s House

I’ve been doing this little Hubba’s House show for about ten months now.  I think I’ve gotten better, maybe even more entertaining.  We’ve been through one revision of the House already this year.

But there’s gonna be another one.  Hubba’s House is undergoing a remodeling project so expansive, so ginormous, that we will have to shut down from Friday until Tuesday.

Which reminds me of a story.  I knew a family who remodeled their house.  They knew it was going to take a while, so they set up the old essential elements of their house in the garage before the remodeling began.  These essential elements included the entire compliment of the old kitchen, and more amusingly, the bathtub/shower combo, which sat between the two airplanes.  (I’m so not making this up.)

I met them after their remodeling project was completed.  But they discovered that having a second house in the garage was so convenient, that they left it that way.  And I used the shower several times.

There is absolutely no moral to that story whatsoever.  But on Tuesday, you can expect to find a revamped, souped up Hubba’s House ready to tackle the economy and legless cats.  In the meantime, you might have to shower between the airplanes.  But you might find that you like it.

The ESN; Blowin’ The Doors Off

The wind blew so hard in Elm Springs on Sunday, that it snatched the door of the Elm Springs Church out of some unlucky worshiper’s hands and blew it off of its hinges, prompting several “open-door policy” jokes. All are welcome at the Elm Springs Church, but please hang on to the door, especially in the wind.

Several of the kind citizens were among the overflowing crowd who attended the Zane Hoffman funeral at the Community Center in Wall on Thursday. Mr. Hoffman will be missed by all of them.
