Where Did It Go?
Last night I realized that it was fully dark at 9 pm. Then I realized that “summer” is pretty much gone.
The days are getting cooler. Julie and John Paul are in college now, Joe leaves tomorrow, Austin and Gemma start high school Monday, and Baby and Carl have been in school for five days already.
I guess I had a premonition on the trailride. Since the trailride schedule dictated that I arise “before the crow pees” (as the somewhat vulgar expression goes) I got to observe the stars at an hour I don’t usually get to. And I discovered that this time of year, between 4 and 5 am, the constellation Orion is visible laying along the eastern edge of the sky. I had always associated him with the beginning of deer hunting season.
Lately, fall has become one of my favorite seasons. And I will have oodles of fun this fall, I just know it. But still, I wonder where the summer went. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was belly-aching about the botched cattle drive to summer pasture.
Other than that, damn I had fun this summer! (more…)

In Memory of Lamont Hill
Lamont Hill, 71, passed away during the Ft. Pierre to Deadwood Trailride from injuries sustained from a fall from his horse. Blaine Nordvold was asked to write and recite a poem for Lamont at the funeral. Unfortunately, the trailride was on a schedule and could not stop for a funeral. I was honored to lead Blaine’s horse while he attended the funeral to read this poem-

Hubba at the Movies
This one’s for my new buddy Howard Main of New Mexico-
Rustler’s Rhapsody
Year; 1985
Director; Hugh Wilson
Starring; Tom Berenger, Andy Griffith, Sela Ward
Squeaky clean (and impossibly well dressed) singing cowboy Rex O’Herlihan is transported from the ‘B’ westerns into the age of “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.” He has to save the town of Oakwood estates while sticking to the Golden Rule. Trouble and hilarity ensue.
Movie trivia; The description on the back of the movie jacket incorrectly names his horse “Wildflower,” when the horse was in fact named “Wildfire.”
Quotable line; “Rex, you shot him in the head! How does that make you feel?”
Rating; One and a half thumbs up!

At the Docs, Part 4
On the evening of July 4th, 1996, a terrible hailstorm ripped through a diagonal swath of western South Dakota, roughly from Belle Fourche to Kadoka, killing horses and cows, breaking windows, destroying roofs and leveling everything in it’s path. The eastern edge of the storm kissed Elm Springs, but Dr. Kovarik’s place had a bullseye on it. I went to help him pick up the mess on July 6th…
It didn’t look too bad in Elm Springs, but the farther west I went the worse it looked. We had had a severe wind and lots of lightning, but it hadn’t ruined anything. As I drove along, I began to see pieces of buildings (more…)
