Hubba's House - The funniest cowboy in the West

The Elm Springs News

October 28th, 2007

We had a week of absolutely glorious fall weather here in Elm Springs.

The Elm Springs Fall Festival was a well attended success Sunday at the Elm Springs Hall. Kind citizens and others lined up in their Halloween costumes to eat Indian tacos, walk for cake, and have their fortunes read by Peggy Gravatt the gypsy. Ryan Elshere made quite a splash dressed as a baby, complete with bib, pacifier and diaper.

The Combined Rebels played the Opal Braves Thursday in Union Center. The Rebels won the “A” game by one point at the buzzer, and won the “C” game, leaving the “B” game to the Braves.

Clyde Arneson hosted Cary, Pam and John Tines and Amanda Humphrey and baby Lainee Mae for supper Wednesday night..

The Ryan Elsheres attended the Marvin Garrett Invitational Roughstock Rodeo at the Events Center in Rapid City Friday and Saturday. Ryan placed first in the first go, and ended up getting third. The Elsheres hosted the Sam Johnstons, Clyde Arneson and Cory Levine Sunday evening.

Larry and Peggy Gravatt made a parts run to Martin on Wednesday and went to Rapid City on Thursday for business. Madi and Steele Fuegen spent the weekend at the Larry Gravatt residence.

Sam and Calder Johnston visited the Kim Kling residence near Belle Fourche Sunday.

Kellie Linn and her kids attended the Fall Festival at the Prairie Bible Church near Enning on Saturday.

The Brett Wilseys of Rapid City visited the “Big House” all day Sunday.

Shirrise Linn and Cheryl Simons returned from Rochester, MN Wednesday. Jack and Scott Simons and Nick Trask were Wednesday evening visitors at the Morris Linns. Shirrise spent Friday night with Grandma Arlene in Rapid City. Shirrise and Kassandra visited the Brett Wilseys at the “Big House” Sunday morning. Sunday visitors at the Morris Linn residence were Nick and Matt Trask and Grandma Arlene and Dayton Shannon.

John Tines, Amanda Humphrey and Lainee Mae visited the Cary Tines residence Sunday night.

The Tony O’neills of Vetal visited Al and Bridget’s Castle Saturday.

Pat and Nick Trask went to Rapid City on business Tuesday. Scott Simons visited the “Upland Trask” residence Wednesday, while RoseMary and several of the kids attended the “Generations of Faith” class in Wall. Cathedral Boy Scout Troop #7, under the direction of Brett Hanson of New Underwood and Randy Rapp of Rapid City, arrived Friday afternoon to spend the weekend on the “Upland Trask” ranch. Nick, dressed as Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, and Steph Trask, dressed as a flapper, attended the Halloween party at the Two Bit Saloon in Quinn Friday night. Baxter and Dunbar Anders visited the “Upland Trask” residence Saturday night, and Tyler Wilson visited Sunday evening.

Matt Trask went to Rapid City on business Tuesday. Steph Trask visited the Matt Trask residence Thursday evening to help him clean. Matt Trask spent the weekend hosting the Boy Scouts on their third annual trailride. You may remember that last year, Matt took advantage of inclement weather the weekend the Boy Scouts arrived, and talked them into “camping” in his garage. This year, there was no inclement weather and poor Matt had to sleep under the stars with the rest of them. He was fed well the entire weekend though. Special thanks should be given to the Andy Linns, who once again loaned Jerry, Pilgrim and Billy to the Boy Scouts, and to Clyde Arneson, who loaned Lando and a saddle.

The “Elk Creek Trasks” attended the Philip/Kadoka football game in Kadoka Tuesday night, which Philip lost. Mark Trask the rest of the Philip FFA marketing team attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN from Wednesday to Friday. Darlene Wulf and Casey Bunner attended the funeral of Ed Sibernaler in Carroll IA on Thursday. Mr. Sibernaler was in the second wave of the D-day invasion of Normandy. On the way home, Darlene and Casey visited the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend IA.

The wind blew through most of the week, making outdoor tasks more unpleasant. Once or twice it tried to rain, mostly without success.

Kind citizens and people from near and far attended the Glade Auction on Friday at the Glade ranch in Elm Springs.

The WTL Club met Thursday at the “Upland Trask” residence. Members in attendance, besides RoseMary, Steph and Julie Trask, were Bridget Trask, Jean and Kellie Linn, Caroline Wilsey, Sandy Fields, Dorothy Anderson and Peggy Gravatt.

And we will do the sports at the top of the page, and try to make some sense of it. Tuesday, representatives of the Sam Johnston and Andy Linn residences attended a Wall Eagles junior high football game in Philip, and then rushed to Union Center where the Meade County girls volleyball team played an exhibition match against their parents. One of the parents reported in a most unsportsmanlike fashion that they “kicked some butt.” On Thursday, Matt Trask, the “Elk Creek Trasks,” and Cary Johnston, who accompanied Scott and Melody Eisenbraun of Wall, attended Wall’s heartbreaking 16-8 season ender in White River. The Wall Eagles were fun to watch all year, and it should also be noted that Kelli Wilson and the rest of the Eagle cheerleaders did a fine job as well.

But back to sports. Sam Johnston and his Combined Rebels took on the Enning Eagles Thursday night in Union Center. The Eagles took the “A” game, and the Rebels took the “B” and “C” games. And Friday, Sam Johnston carted Carlee, Emily Linn and Mattee Pauley to a volleyball tournament in Faith, which Kellie Linn arrived at later.

Marvin and Rod Anders hosted Joe Trask in Kadoka over the weekend, while they worked cows near Norris.

‘Tis the season when neighbors help neighbors work cows, and that is why Clyde Arneson was a dinner guest at one Linn residence or another on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. That is also why Andy Linn and kids were dinner guests at the Clyde Arneson residence on Saturday. Clyde went to Sturgis on business Monday, and Clyde and Connie attended the Curtis and Lena Stangle wedding reception in New Underwood on Saturday night.

Lynn and Sandy Fields also attended the Stangle wedding reception Saturday night.

Marion Case and her daughter and granddaughter Melissa and Hannah Lund of Iowa were supper guests at the Larry Gravatt residence Thursday night. Larry Gravatt picked up Jack in Rapid City Saturday and brought him to Elm Springs for his Sunday birthday. The Gravatts went to New Underwood Sunday to celebrate Jack’s birthday, where they were joined by the Jerry Gravatts, the Byron Denkes, Dora Mae Jensen and Brad Bookbinder.

Jim Scull of Rapid City was a dinner guest at the “Upland Trask” residence on Saturday. Saturday night, the “Upland Trasks” hosted a birthday party for Al and Celine Trask, who turned 26 and 11 respectively. Guests in attendance, besides the Al Trasks, were Ray Olson and Patrick Wilson. Morris Linn visited the “Upland Trask” residence Sunday afternoon, and Julie left for Ft. Collins, CO Sunday night.

Matt Trask visited the “Brustol AFB” on his tractor briefly Friday afternoon, before trading in the tractor for his pickup so that he could get to the Tim Haugen residence in time for supper. Saturday night, he went to New Underwood to attend the Stangle wedding reception. At Steve’s Superstore, he was kidnapped by the wedding party for a ride around town in a very redneck fancy stretch Hummer. After attending the wedding reception in New Underwood, he went to Wasta for Kyle Schell’s going away party. On Sunday he and Steph attended the Wicksville Craft Fair. In Matt Trask world, every day is a party.

The “Elk Creek Trasks” attended the Philip Lady Scotties volleyball game in Philip Saturday night, and Philip and Mary Kay Wilson visited the “Elk Creek Trask” residence Sunday evening.

Bruce Wilsey of Sioux Falls was an overnight guest at the Jim Wilsey residence Saturday night.

Philip Wilson caught a ride to Minneapolis, MN Monday to meet up with Mary Kay and meet young Samuel John Wolberg. Philip and Mary Kay returned Wednesday. Philip noted with some despair that it started raining in Philip, SD when he left for Minneapolis, and he was in the rain continuously until passing through Philip, SD on the return trip. Elm Springs was dry when he returned.

Melvin and Dorothy Anderson and Harold Delbridge returned last Sunday night from Huron, where they had attended the SDRA Finals rodeo. Harold announced the rodeo and Melvin and Dorothy gave wagon rides to special needs children. Joan Sutton visited the Melvin Anderson residence Thursday, bringing with her Graham Gurtner of Windsor, England.

The Elm Springs Fall festival is this Sunday, the 28th of October, starting at noon at the Elm Springs Hall. There will be a free will Indian taco dinner, bingo, cakewalk, silent auction, a costume contest, and fun for people of all ages.

The kind citizens hope to see you there.

While much of southwestern South Dakota got one or two inches of rain over the weekend, the kind citizens had to be satisfied with around a quarter of an inch.

Most of the ESN this week is of the community, as opposed to the individual household, variety. We are going to list the events more or less in order of importance, and so they may not be in chronological order.

Long time kind citizen Eula Ferguson was laid to rest at the Elm Springs Cemetery Thursday afternoon. Almost all of the kind citizens attended either the burial and reception in Elm Springs or the funeral at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis or both.

And several of the kind citizens attended the Wall v. Philip football game in Wall Friday night. The game was roundly described by everyone as “the most exciting game of the season,” and easily could have gone either way, but it went to Wall, 22-20.

The Elm Springs People Who Play Cards met for the first court whist tournament of the season on Wednesday at the Jim and Caroline Wilsey residence. Several regular members had other obligations and had to call a substitute. Cary Johnston got the high score for the night, and Steph Trask, appearing as Sandy Fields, won the booby prize.

The Elm Springs schoolchildren, driven by Kellie Linn and Mrs. Terry Barry, went on a school trip to the band concert in Whitewood on Thursday.

And several of the kind citizens attended either the Wayne and Stacy White auction near Scenic, or the REA meeting in Wall on Saturday.

The “Upland Trasks” made a few trips here and there, but nothing of particular note. Dunbar Anders was a Thursday night guest at the “Upland Trask” residecne and Tim Haggerty and Mike McDonald of Rapid City visited while grouse hunting Friday. Dr. Jim MacDougall and his girlfriend Amy visited Sunday afternoon.

Matt Trask was the guest of Dale and Mary Lewis of Wasta Thursday evening at the SD Historical Society’s opening night, which featured Shebby Lee, niece of Badger Clark, giving a presentation about her famous uncle. The Lewis’ were also brave enough to buy Matt supper. Matt spent Saturday night at the Rob and Andrea Goodman residence near Kyle to attend the Sunday baptism of young Clancy Willard Goodman in Kyle. Since he was there, the couple let Matt read a passage from the Good Book and pour the water into the baptismal font. He performed both of these tasks well enough to be invited back to the Goodman residence for the reception, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Philip and Mary Kay Wilson are proud to announce the arrival of grandson Samuel John Wolberg, who was born in Minneapolis, MN Wednesday morning to Josh and Amy Wolberg, weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces and measuring 21 and a half inches long. He joins big sister Mary. Grandma Mary Kay left Wednesday for Minneapolis to visit the family.

The Elm Springs Church will hold services Sunday, October 21st at 2 pm.

The kind citizens would like to offer their condolences to their mailman Freddy Ferguson on the passing of his mother.
