The Elm Springs News
The leaves on the trees in Elm Springs have begun to change into their autumn colors, as the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder
Some of the kind citizens attended the Wall Eagles dispiriting loss to the Harding Co. Ranchers in Wall Friday night. Kellie Linn, Cary Johnston and Bunny Pauley attended the Rural volleyball tournament in New Underwood on Saturday, while Andy and Jacob Linn attended the junior high Football Jamboree in Wall before attending the last game of the Rural volleyball tournament. And the “Elk Creek Trasks” attended Philip’s homecoming football game against White River Friday night, and the Philip volleyball game Saturday, both in Philip.
‘Tis the season of many things, including antelope hunters. We know that Dave Hicks and Jared Hicks of Yankton and Gene and Rory Pluth of Rapid City were antelope hunters at the Linn ranch over the weekend, and John Madsen and company of Rapid City visited the “Upland Trask” ranch for the same purpose Saturday.
We begin this week’s ESN with the Lawrence Burkes, who hosted fisherwomen Melissa Burke, Alena Willar and Stacey Ritter, all of Rapid City, on Saturday. Lawrence visited the Russell Burmeister residence in Wasta on Sunday.
Marcia Arneson of Rapid City joined Chrissy Elshere and kids on a trip to Sioux Falls Saturday to help Grace Arneson celebrate her birthday. While they were gone, Ryan visited the Jim and Lana Elshere residence near Milesville. The Elsheres returned home Sunday, and Nick Trask visited them Sunday evening.
Maria Trask visited the Sam Johnston residence for an hour or so after school Wednesday afternoon, until Matt and Celine came to pick her up. Kim Kling of Belle Fourche visited the Sam Johnston residence Sunday morning.

Kassandra Linn visited the Sam Johnston residence after school Tuesday afternoon. Bunny Pauley was a coffee visitor at the Morris Linn residence Wednesday morning, Shirrise and Kassandra went to Wall Wednesday afternoon, and Matt Trask visited Wednesday evening. In addition to hosting the antelope hunters over the weekend, Shirrise and Kassandra visited the Travis and Melissa Byrne residence near Viewfield and Kassandra visited Grandma Arlene and Dayton Shannon Saturday afternoon, and Clyde Arneson was a supper guest Saturday night. Bunny Pauley and her girls and Andy Linn were coffee visitors at the Morris Linn residence Sunday morning and Matt Trask visited Sunday afternoon.
Ray Olsen hosted brother Kermit of San Jose, CA on Tuesday. Kermit was in South Dakota for a high school reunion in Rapid City and wished to tour his boyhood home, visit the Linns, and very strangely, meet Matt Trask. He got to do all three.
Matt Trask wished to eat supper twice on Tuesday, which he did, first at the Cary Tines residence, and next at Al and Bridget’s Castle.
Bridget and Little Pat Trask left the Castle Wednesday, staying all night at the Carmelite guesthouse in Alexandria before catching a plane in Sioux Falls Thursday to attend the Saturday birthday party of great grandma Victoria Watson. Little Pat, it should be noted, has grown to immense proportions for a child of his age, so that “Little Pat” doesn’t set him quite right. He has gotten so big that some idiot carelessly called him “Humongous Herbert” one day, and the name has attracted a small following. For the sake of clarity, he will be referred to as “Little Pat” in the ESN. Nick Trask visited the Castle Sunday afternoon.
Matt Trask left Thursday for Deadwood to attend the SD Book Festival over the weekend. While there, he was the guest of Blas Skvicalo (still somehow pronounced “SQUEECH-alo”) of rural Lead, who treated him like a visiting dignitary, driving him to and from the Book Festival and feeding him twice a day. Before each meal, Matt protested theatrically before devouring everything. And so Matt spent the weekend in grand style, posing as an academic by day and bothering his host by night. On his way home Sunday, he also visited at the Paul Bruch residence near Bear Butte.
Pat Trask attended the cross country meet in Lead Tuesday to watch Gemma compete for the Wall Eagles. Apparently no one told him that Gemma did not go to the meet. Undaunted, Pat cheered for the Wall Eagles who had gone. RoseMary, Maria and Celine Trask picked up Maria Munoz of Rapid City in Wasta Friday and traveled to St. Mary’s College in Winona, MN, to visit John Paul Trask and young Mr. Munoz, whose first name might be Eric. The “Upland Trasks” were not home Sunday night to report what else they did.
Tom Trask returned to the “Elk Creek Trask” ranch Thursday from Africa, where he had been hunting.
Jim and Caroline Wilsey returned last Sunday from Elk River, MN, where they had visited son Tim and his family. This week they went to Rapid City Wednesday and Friday, both times on business.
Kelli Wilson attended a gymnastics camp in Rapid City on Friday.
Mary Kay Wilson, accompanied by Shirley Kitterman of Wall and Megan Regglin of Rapid City went to Minneapolis, MN over the weekend to visit the Wolbergs and Beth Wilson.
Melvin and Dorothy Anderson had lunch in Rapid City with Audey Anderson, who will soon be leaving for Iraq. Bunny Pauley and the girls visited the Melvin Anderson residence Sunday.
The kind citizens hope you are enjoying the fall colors.

The first frost of the season occurred on Thursday night in Elm Springs. This event carries great significance to the agricultural person. The women of Elm Springs accidentally proved a point that the men had been making all along, namely that the WTL Club and the Country Red Hat organization are only different names for the same group. They did this by holding both on the same day, at the same locations, with the same women. First, the Country Red Hat Ladies, Jean, Kellie and Carol Linn, Carolyn Anders, Caroline Wilsey, Norma Pellegrin, Peggy Gravatt and Natalie Tines went to Rapid City where they rode the trolley. Their exit from the trolley was caught on film by a news crew who happened to be in the vicinity, and was shown on the local news. Then this same group of women visited the Lorraine Ven Huizen residence where, simply by taking off the hats, they became the WTL Club.

Sunday visitors at the “Upland Trask” residence were the Paul Yantes’ of Rapid City and Jeff and Jared Nelson and Jim and Jay Steuer (pronounced “STOY-er”) of Manitowoc, WI, on their way to Wyoming.
Matt Trask made a brief appearance at the Shearer wedding reception, before going to the “Big Green Trask House” in Wall, where he harassed Milton, Jaymie and Torrie Trask with his guitar, calling it “practice” for his late night appearance on the stage at the Relay for Life in Wall. At this, he made a great honking spectacle of himself, telling what passed for jokes and mangling several songs with his guitar. At one point, he somehow became the auctioneer for an impromptu bake sale, where he tried to sell an apple pie, a pan of cinnamon rolls and a “date with me” for $5000. The pie and cinnamon rolls brought $13. Matt spent the remainder of Saturday night at the “Big Green Trask House” before going back to Elm Springs, where he accompanied the Ft. Pierre to Deadwood Trailride committee on a tour of the trailride route
The “Elk Creek Trasks” attended a Philip volleyball game in Philip on Thursday night, and a football game in New Underwood on Friday night. Sunday, they escorted the Trailride people across their property.
All of the “W’s” were not home to report what they did this week.
The kind citizens wish you a wonderful week.

On Monday of this week, the temperature pegged at 104 degrees. On Saturday and Sunday nights, it almost froze here in Elm Springs. Perhaps we could say there was something for everybody in last week’s weather.
Now that the school year has started, many of the kind citizens find themselves on football sidelines cheering on their favorite team. The Andy Linns and the Sam Johnstons attended a JV/Junior High football game in Presho on Tuesday, and the Andy Linns attended another Junior High football game on Saturday in White River, while the Sam Johnstons, the “Upland Trasks” and the “Elk Creek Trasks” attended the Prospector Bowl in Deadwood. The “Upland Trasks” and the Johnstons went to watch Wall get handed another loss at the hands of Newell, while the “Elk Creek Trasks” witnessed a defensive slugging match between Philip and Harding County from which Philip emerged victorious, 6-2.
And Kingston Oliver Wulf, infant son of Justin and Kayla Wulf, was baptized Sunday at St. Margarets in Lakeside. After the baptism, several kind citizens, Catholic or otherwise, enjoyed dinner at the John and Darlene Wulf residence.

Bridget and Little Pat Trask went to Rapid City Friday to keep appointments. The Al Trasks returned to Rapid City Saturday afternoon.
The “Upland Trasks” hosted most of the Col. Dennis Wier family of Omaha NE from Monday evening to Thursday morning. The Wiers proved to be an immense help to the somewhat beleaguered “Upland Trasks.” Wednesday evening dinner guests, besides the Wiers, were the Al Trasks and the Dale Sawvells of Creighton. Several of the “Upland Trasks” went to Rapid City Sunday.
Dear reader, you really should have been warned of this news item at the top of the column. Nick Trask, pay attention, Nick Trask escorted the lovely Ms. Ashley Turdgeon of Wasta to Rapid City Friday night, where they had a nice dinner at an uptown restaurant before catching the tail end of the Stockgrowers Convention. It does seem fitting that an “Upland Trask” took his date to the Stockgrowers Convention, now doesn’t it?
Matt Trask retrieved his computer from Rapid City Wednesday evening. On Friday, Matt left Elm Springs for Nebraska, visiting the Tony O’neill residence near Cody and staying all night in Valentine before driving to North Platte to attend the wedding of Trent Allison to Emily Brown, which it should be noted, Steph and Julie Trask, Tracey Orsburn, and Jill Heidy of Wauneta, NE also attended. Matt returned to Elm Springs by a rather circuitous route Sunday, visiting the Brady and Lane O’Rourke residence near Quinn and driving to Rapid City to buy a new pair of sunglasses because he had broken his while jitterbugging with Julie the night before. It is imperative that Matt look good while doing the nothing that he does so well.
Several of the kind citizens were not home to report what they did, so that is all we have.
The kind citizens hope you don’t catch a fever in this topsy-turvy weather.
