The Elm Springs News

It is very hot these days, and fire has once again become a real danger in Elm Springs, as well as around the region

Several of the kind citizens attended the Wasta 4th of July festivities on Wednesday. While not boasting last year’s turnout, Wasta nevertheless held another charming celebration.

Saturday, July 7th, 2007 was touted as being a lucky day, having three sevens in the numerical date. Across the country, a large number of couples attempted to capture the luck by getting married on that date. Among these couples were Clint Hammerstrom and Lisa Pflaumer, who were married in a charming outdoor ceremony at the Hammerstrom residence Saturday evening, with several kind citizens in attendance.

Clyde Arneson went to Union Center on business Tuesday. Matt and Nick Trask and Morris Linn joined Clyde in his driveway Sunday afternoon, where most of them had a beer.

Lawrence and Doris Burke went to Rapid City for the 4th of July, where they had lunch before visiting grandkids Skyler and Shawnee Burke. Mark and Fleda Jensen of Hoover visited the Lawrence Burke residence Saturday.

Larry and Peggy Gravatt and the grandkids went to Rapid City Monday, where Larry took Jack to a doctors appointment while Peggy and the grandkids watched a movie. They all met up at Chuck E Cheese afterward for fun and games. The Gravatts took Madi and Steele back to Rapid City after the 4th of July celebration in Wasta. Peggy went to Rapid City Thursday to help Brad Bookbinder look for an apartment. Brad has found a job working for the hospital in Rapid City.

Ryan and Chrissy Elshere hosted the Sam Johnstons and Shirrise and Kassandra Linn on the 4th of July.

And the Sam Johnstons attended a 4-H rodeo in Kadoka on Sunday, where Carlee won the breakaway roping.

The Andy Linns left Monday to go camping at Horse Thief Campground in the Black Hills. They returned Wednesday. On Sunday, Jim and Jean Ross visited the Andy Linn residence on their way home from a class reunion in Waubay.

Clyde Arneson was a Tuesday morning coffee guest at the Morris Linn residence. Shirrise and Kassandra went to Wall Wednesday, where they visited Sandy Van Vleck and Sanden and Elaine Simons. Shirrise took Kassandra to basketball camp in Union Center Thursday, and left her at the Scott Simons residence to help Ashlyn celebrate her birthday. Shirrise hosted a stamp party at her home Friday. Nick Trask was a supper guest at the Morris Linns Saturday night, and Matt Trask visited Sunday night.

Cary and Pam Tines and Samantha Scott traveled to Chapel, NE Friday to visit Coby, leaving Samantha there when they returned. John Tines and baby Lainee Mae visited the Cary Tines residence Sunday afternoon.

The “Madrid Army” arrived at the Castle in waves beginning with the Thursday arrival of Tim and Max, who had driven up from Las Vegas NV in Al and Bridget’s new used Dodge Dakota. Linda Haugen visited the Castle Friday to do some sewing. Elizabeth Wier of Omaha, NE and several Madrid girls arrived at the Castle Saturday afternoon, and the remainder arrived Saturday night. They had all come to witness the Sunday baptism of Patrick Alexander at the Cathedral in Rapid City, on Al and Bridgets first anniversary. Now isn’t that just the cutest story you’ve ever heard? The “Upland Trasks” and the “Madrid Army” spent the aftenoon at the Castle, having fun and paintball wars.

Gemma and Celine Trask spent Wednesday night at the Joe Deering residence. RoseMary, John Paul and Bridget Trask and the Three Little Girls attended the baby shower for Eva Marie and Kingston Oliver at the John Wulf residence Friday evening.

On the way he stopped at the Big Green Trask House to wish his uncle Milton a happy 4th of July and help himself to a free can of Coke. Julie also served as Matt’s lovely assistant at the Watermelon Spitout.

The “Elk Creek Trasks,” the Mark Radway family, and Jaymie, Torrie and Tyler Trask went to Valentine NE Tuesday to spend the day on the Niobrara River.

Dorothy Anderson met the Deerings at the Colonial House restaurant in Rapid City Tuesday. Taylor Anderson of Spearfish arrived at the Melvin Anderson residence Tuesday evening to spend the 4th with them. The Andersons met Mavis and Marilyn Madison at Wasta for lunch on the 4th. On Friday, the Andersons hosted Bill Smoot, David Kalil, George, Sandy, Cheyenne, Autumn and Sheridan Deering and a birthday party for Jane Karp.

Although it happened in nearby Wicksville, this story is worth telling in the ESN. Lorinda Simon was to marry John Covell on Saturday the seventh at 3:33 pm, which seemed very lucky indeed. On Friday the sixth, though, things began to go wrong, beginning with word that the best man and the ring bearer were unable to attend. A windstorm ruined the canvas tent where the wedding was to be held, and the father of the bride, pay attention now, was bitten by a rattlesnake. To make things even worse, Saturday the seventh was at least 110 degrees everywhere. But the wedding took place at 3:33 as scheduled, with a hastily furnished tent, a beaming father with a swollen arm, a stand-in best man, and Grandma Norma Simon’s dog serving as the ring bearer. In addition, they took care to keep the service short so as to prevent heat stroke among the guests.

The kind citizens think thats a story they can tell the grandkids!

The Elm Springs News

July 1st, 2007

In what seems to be a repeat of last year, and the year before, and the year before, the weather here in Elm Springs has become unbearably, excruciatingly hot. And our stubborn, unceasing, psychologically tormenting stiff hot southerly breeze has returned to sing in our ears both day and night. The aforementioned conditions have given rise to four small fires, all started by Trasks of one stripe or another.

Despite all that, there is big, fun, joyous news to be found in Elm Springs. Patrick Alexander Trask replaced Rylan Elshere as the Newest Kind Citizen on Wednesday at 10:35 am. He weighed 8.7 lbs and measured 22 inches long. He arrived at Al and Bridget’s Castle on Friday.

On a sadder note, most of the kind citizens attended the Marge Fenner funeral, burial and reception, all in Elm Springs on Wednesday. Marge was most recently from Texas.

Marvin and Carolyn Anders attended Richard and Martha Johnston’s 25th wedding anniversary party in Wall on Saturday. It should be noted that Melvin Anderson attended the same party. On Sunday, Casey, Shirley and Chance Trask were dinner guests at the Marvin Anders residence.

Clyde Arneson went to several towns Tuesday on business.

Wayne and Maureen Fields of Loveland, CO arrived Friday night at the Lynn and Sandy Fields residence. Sandy and Maureen went to Rapid City Saturday, where they attended the Heritage Festival in Memorial Park and the Presidents Festival downtown. Sunday morning, Maureen accompanied Sandy to church in Red Owl and then Lynn and Sandy and Wayne and Maureen and Leona Fields went to Wall to eat at the Red Rock restaurant.

Chase Gravatt was a helpful guest at the Larry Gravatt residence most of the week. Larry and Peggy Gravatt went to Rapid City Wednesday night to watch young Steele Fuegen compete in his last baseball game of the season. Peggy returned to Rapid City Saturday to pick up Steele and Madi, who will be spending several days with the Gravatts. On Sunday, Peggy and the kids had fun making sock puppets.

The Sam Johnstons most likely attended the Kling family reunion in Belle Fourche over the weekend, although we did not hear that from them.

John and Jean Linn left last Sunday on a bus bound for Williston, ND. From there, they boarded a train which took them to Glacier National Park. After spending a few days tooling around the park, they made the trip in reverse, returning home Friday.

Shirrise and Kassandra returned from Wyoming Monday. Morris and Kassandra went to Wall Tuesday. Morris visited the “Big House” Thursday to visit the Brett Wilseys and Bart Wilsey of New Mexico. When Morris returned, the Morris Linns left to spend the weekend at Shadehill reservoir with the Simons’.

Andrew Smith of Pierre arrived at the Jim Smith residence Friday for an extended stay.

Cary and Pam Tines accompanied Dennis and Tanya Jensen and Monte and Loni Reichert on a motorcycle excursion to Huron to visit relatives Saturday.

Al and Bridget Trask spent about half the week in Rapid City having the baby.

Grandpa and Grandma “Upland Trask” and Aunts Gemma and Maria went to Rapid City Wednesday night to meet Patrick Alexander. John Paul Trask arrived at the “Upland Trask” residence Saturday, having quit his job in Gilette. Bridget and Patrick Trask visited the “Upland Trask” residence Saturday evening so that every one else in the family could meet him. The young lad shows a remarkable determination to spend the beginning of his life sleeping. He hardly cracked an eyelid during the three hour visit to Grandpa and Grandma’s. Ray Olsen was a Saturday evening guest at the “Upland Trask” residence. On Sunday, John Paul, Nick and Austin went to Gilette WY to finish John Paul’s move, while Joe Trask, accompanied by Clay Tines and Shane Green, went swimming in Wall.

On Friday, an apparently orphaned fawn showed up in the “Upland Trask” yard, which was promptly taken in by the “Upland Trasks.” On Saturday she began to defecate in the house. This problem was addressed in several ways, the most notable being a diaper fashioned for the little critter out of a plastic bag and duct tape by the Three Little Girls. When the diaper proved to be extremely difficult to change, she was let out into the yard and could not be found Sunday morning.

Matt Trask went to Rapid City on Sunday for a touch of business and on his way home visited the Dan Turgeon residence, the Kendall Kjerstad residence and the Terry Schell residence in Wasta..

The Kent Wilseys of Edmond OK arrived at the Jim Wilsey residence Monday and have spent the entire week. Tom Wilsey of Tea arrived at the Jim Wilsey residence Wednesday, and was joined by the rest of his family, except for Ben, who was already there, on Saturday. On Sunday, Tom’s daughters Jeanette and Ashley went to Rapid City.

Kenny, Janet and Kelli Wilson went to the Elk Creek Steakhouse Friday night to celebrate Janet’s Thursday birthday.

Bunny Pauley and the girls visited the Melvin Anderson residence Thursday afternoon. Tyler and Taryn Caspers visited Friday. On Saturday, Dorothy met Leslie Anderson in Rapid City.

The kind citizens would like to welcome Patrick Alexander to their community.
