The weather has warmed up quite nicely here in Elm Springs. Most of the snow is now gone, and about three-quarters of the mud as well.
Several of the kind citizens attended the Ag Appreciation Banquet in Sturgis Friday night.
This seems to have been just a ho-hum week, so here we go.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders went to the Legion Hall in Faith Sunday to help Alice Maier celebrate her birthday.
Baxter and Dunbar Anders attended the Bennett Co. versus Pine Ridge girls basketball game in Rapid City Thursday. Rod and Kelly Anders attended an auction in Rapid City Saturday.
Clyde went to Sturgis on business Wednesday, and Clyde and Connie went to Sturgis Friday night.
Russell Burmeister of Wasta was a Monday morning visitor at the Lawrence and Doris Burke residence. The Burkes went to Rapid City Wednesday to attend the funeral of John Tuxford. And Friday Lawrence and Doris went to Union Center, where Lawrence had the oil changed on the pickup while Doris got her hair fixed before they had lunch at the Bull Creek Cafe.
Andy Linn attended the Carl Wahl farm auction near Union Center Wednesday. Thursday, Kellie left for California to attend Quantum Eneregetics training.
The Andy Linn children spent considerable amounts of time at the “Big House” this week.
Jean Linn and Charlotte Wilsey were visitors at the Morris Linn residence Monday morning to pick Kassandra up so that she could join the other children sledding. The Morris Linns had supper Monday night at the Jack and Cheryl Simons residence near Enning before visiting Bummer and Jodi Simons in Enning. Then we skip clear til Friday when Shelane, Sanden and Sage Graham visited the Morris Linns before Shirrise took Kassandra to piano lessons in Wall and visited Sanden and Elaine Simons. Sandy and David Van Vleck and Clyde Arneson were Saturday visitors at the Morris Linn residence. Sunday, Melissa Byrne of Owanka accompanied Shirrise to a stamp party at the GeorgiAnn Cobb residence near Red Owl and Matt, Nick and Al Trask were evening visitors at the Morris Linn residence.
Saturday was young Emilee Pauley’s birthday, and Jim and Caroline Wilsey visited the Pauleys for birthday breakfast. Saturday night, the Pauleys and the Wilseys all visited the Melvin and Dorothy Anderson residence for birthday supper. While they brought a cake to celebrate the occasion, someone found a pie which tasted better, so they ate that instead. Bunny Pauley visited Alvina Glade Sunday afternoon.
Matt Trask visited the Cary Tines residence Monday night, and Amanda Humphrey visited Tuesday night. Coby Tines spent the weekend at the Cary Tines residence. Sunday, Cary, Pam, Coby and Clay went to Rapid City where they had dinner at the Millstone restaurant with Grandma Natalie Tines and Joan Racicky.
Bridget Trask left Tuesday for Columbus, OH to spend a week visiting her family.
Mark and Mick Trask competed in the State ‘B” wrestling tournament in Aberdeen.
Even the “Upland Trasks” had a ho-hum week. Visitors were Steve Hobart, Clair and Eric Rowett, Tom Bruch, and Jim Scull. Pat, Matt and Nick attended the R-CALF regional meeting in Rapid Friday afternoon.
Mary Kay Wilson returned Wednesday from Minneapolis/St. Paul. Philip and Mary Kay had lunch in Wall Sunday with Monte and Lori Harer of Hoven.
In addition to hosting the Pauleys and the Wilseys Saturday night, Melvin and Dorothy Anderson entertained Laramie Opstedahl Monday morning, Matt Trask Wednesday evening, and Fred, Jane, EJ and Charles Karp and Melissa Borst Sunday morning. Melvin is holding a release party for his third book, “In Days Gone By,” on the 24th of March at the Borders Bookstore in Rapid City.
The kind citizens would like to welcome the geese on their trip north through South Dakota.

Just the weather in Elm Springs this past week was enough to make a full column. It continued to snow until there were at least six inches on the level all over Elm Springs, turning bitterly cold in the process. And then it rained Thursday night, enough to stick the snow to the ground through Friday’s wind. Now it is wet and muddy, but as Doris Burke says, “we better not complain about that.”
Wednesday, for what it’s worth, was Valentine’s Day.
The People Who Play Cards met at the Sam and Cary Johnston residence Wednesday night for their February court whist game, hosted by the Johnstons and Norma Pellegrin. Lynn Fields got 1st for the night, Larry Gravatt got 2nd, and Marvin Anders 3rd.
Several of the kind citizens attended the Ag Appreciation Banquet and dance in Wall on Friday, to feel the love.
Clyde Arneson accompanied Lonnie Arneson to Vivian Thuirsday, to attend their uncle Wesley Mann’s funeral. Clyde was also a coffee guest at the Lawrence Burke residence maybe Tuesday.
Lynn and Sandy Fields hosted son Jason all week. Jason came out from Rapid City to help calve the heifers; of course they started calving the day he left. Sunday afternoon, the Fields’ entertained Marvin and Carolyn Anders and Dean and Mary Boydston of New Underwood.
Peggy Gravatt went to Wall Thursday, where she visited Dora Mae Jensen.
The Sam Johnstons hosted Emily and Jacob Linn Friday night. Saturday, they went to Wall to watch Calder play a basketball game before hustling to Rapid City to watch Carson play in a basketball tournament.
Andy, Kellie and Ben Linn left Thursday for Denver, CO to watch nephew Mike Ross place 2nd in the 171 lb. Weight class at the Colorado State High School wrestling tournament. They returned Sunday.
While they were gone, Emily and Jacob Linn stayed at the “Big House,” except for Friday night. John and Jean also hosted Charlotte Wilsey and the girls over the weekend, and Kassandra Linn Sunday afternoon.
Shirrise and Kassandra Linn went to Rapid City Wednesday to keep appointments, and afterwards visited both the Elsheres and the Johnstons. On Thursday, Shirrise and Kassandra again visited the Johnstons. Clyde Arneson was a coffee visitor Friday morning at the Morris Linn residence. Randy and Kenny Holst visited Saturday. Charlotte Wilsey and the girls stopped by the Morris Linn residence Sunday.
The Pauleys entertained Jim and Caroline Wilsey Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday, Bunny went to Isabel to attend the funerals of Jace Waddell and Jeffery Bold. The Pauleys visited the Melvin and Dorothy Anderson residence Thursday to deliver the Anderson’s Valentine gift and celebrate young Mayzee’s Valentine’s Day birthday a day late with homemade ice cream. And the Pauleys had “coffee and pop” Saturday at the Clyde Arneson residence.
Al and Bridget Trask treated Fr. Leo Hausmann and Matt Trask to supper at the Cactus Cafe in Wall Saturday night.
The “Elk Creek Trasks” attended the Regional Wrestling Tournament held in Philip on Saturday, at which Mark and Mick both placed 2nd in their respective weight divisions, earning a spot at the state wrestling tournament.
Nick Trask left Monday for Washington, DC on the R-CALF fly in. While there, he visited cousin Mike Bucher. He returned Thursday. John Paul came out to the “Upland Trask” place from Gillette to help while he was gone. Ray Olson was a visitor at the “Upland Trask” residence Tuesday. Nick Hobart of Hill City spent most of the week helping the “Upland Trasks.” Pat and RoseMary took a romantic trip to Rapid City Wednesday to do their taxes. Celine Trask stayed overnight at the Joe Deering residence Friday night. Mike Morrison of almost Wyoming visited over the weekend, and Hank, Tom and Theresa Bruch visited Saturday afternoon to pick up Gemma so that she could attend Theresa’s 18th birthday party.
Also on Saturday, the “Upland Trasks” made a phone call to the Carmelite Convent in Alexandria to wish Sr. Magdalena a happy 21st birthday.
Kenny, Janet and Kelli Wilson attended the Sports Show in Rapid City on Saturday. Sunday, Katherine and Linda Tifft visited the Kenny Wilson residence for tea.
Mary Kay Wilson left Saturday for Minneapolis, MN to visit the Wolbergs and Beth Wilson. While she was gone, Philip went to Rapid City Sunday where he and Patrick attended the Sports Show.

Old Man Winter finally brought something besides bitter cold to Elm Springs last week; the whole community is blanketed in a healthy coat of snow. Several children reported having fun sledding over the weekend.
Tucky and Linda Tift of nearby Owanka hosted a wedding reception for their daughter and her new husband in New Underwood Saturday night, which many of the kind citizens attended. Roberto and Kristy (Tift) Vega were married December 30th in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
For quite a while, Matt Trask was the only attendant at St. Margarets Saturday night Mass in Lakeside, besides Fr. Leo Hausmann. After being sternly admonished to behave himself, Matt was allowed to sit in the front row. But Matt was greatly relieved when Philip and Mary Kay Wilson showed up, because he was having trouble relying on himself to recall the words to all the prayers.
The Country Red Hat Ladies went to Rapid City Wednesday to celebrate Judith Olsen’s 90th birthday at Diamond Dan’s restaurant. They brought along a cake made by kind citizen Shirrise Linn. CRH attendance was impressive at this function, which included Judith Olsen, Jean and Kellie Linn, Carolyn Anders, Caroline Wilsey, Dorothy Anderson, Maxine Smith, Twila Trask, Norma Pellegrin, Paula Eisenbraun, Joanne Fenner, Natalie Tines, Francis Kellum, and a woman named Ruth.
The Elm Springs School “upper room” spent Monday and Tuesday visiting the Mobile Science Lab in Union Center. And the Elm Springs eighth graders had a field day in Pierre on Thursday.
Clyde and Connie Arneson took a business trip to Faith Saturday.
Ryan Elshere and his dad Jim made a bet concerning the outcome of a certain football game, with the agreement that the loser had to cook dinner for the winner and his family. As the loser of the bet, Ryan and Chrissy Elshere and family visited the Jim and Lana Elshere residence Sunday to cook steaks for dinner and spend the afternoon. Lucky Clyde Arneson accompanied the Elshere’s to the Elshere’s, so to speak.
Lonnie Arneson visited the “Upland Trask” residence Wednesday.
Lawrence and Doris Burke went to Rapid City Wednesday to do their taxes. Thursday morning, Clyde Arneson visited the Burkes for coffee.
Jason Fields arrived at the Lynn Fields residence Saturday to help for a few days. Sunday visitors at the Fields residence were Lawrence Burke in the morning and John and Jean Linn in the afternoon.
The Sam Johnstons attended the Philip Invitational basketball tournament in Philip on Saturday, at which Calder and the Wall Junior Eagles placed 2nd. Carson Johnston was an overnight guest at the Andy Linn residence Saturday.
Clyde Arneson visited the Andy Linn residence one day, but no one seems to remember which day it was. Our resident fraud Matt Trask gave Andy and Jacob Linn their first banjo lesson Friday, after only beginning on the instrument himself last week. Soon he will most likely be trying court cases and delivering babies all for the modest price of a free meal.
John and Jean Linn attended the Legislative crackerbarrel in Union Center Sunday.
Morris and Shirrise Linn spent Monday night at the Gene and Marsha Pluth residence in Rapid City. Clyde Arneson was a coffee visitor at the Morris Linn residence Friday morning, while Jean Linn visited Saturday. Sunday, Shirrise attended a stamping party in Union Center. Melissa Byrne of Viewfield was a visitor Sunday afternoon.
Coby Tines spent the weekend at the Cary Tines residence. Saturday afternoon, Kyle Scott of Plainview visited the Tines’. Cary and Pam and friends went to Deadwood Saturday night.
Darlene Wulf, Alisa Machado and Devon Antone visited the “Upland Trask” residence Thursday. David Kalil of Rapid City was a visitor Saturday. RoseMary Trask attended the St. John’s Guild Ladies Tea in New Underwood Saturday afternoon, and then joined Pat and David and Candy Kalil in Rapid City for supper at the Outback Steakhouse.
Matt Trask attended the Badlands Invitational AAU wrestling tournament in Wall Sunday to watch Autumn and John Deering compete. They placed 2nd and 4th, respectively. On the way home he stopped at the Schell Ranch, where the gang was building a temporary living quarters for the night calver.
Kenny and Janet Wilson hosted the Philip Wilsons and the “Elk Creek Trasks” Sunday for Kenny’s birthday party.
The kind citizens need to go find their snowboots.

It got terribly cold here in Elm Springs over the past week, which made winter chores more difficult.
Most people’s social activities revolved around either the Black Hills Stock Show or the rain soaked fumble-fest in Miami, Super Bowl XLI. The kind citizens watched in disgust as the rain piled up in Florida, while outside the cracks in the ground continue to get bigger.
The WTL club met Monday at the new Lynn and Sandy Fields residence. Members present, besides Sandy, were Jean, Kellie and Shirrise Linn, Dorothy Anderson, Caroline Wilsey, Peggy Gravatt, Linda Tifft, and RoseMary Trask.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders went to the Stock Show “a couple times,” says Carolyn. Marvin and Baxter Anders went to Mitchell Sunday on business.
Clyde Arneson “run up (to the Stock Show Rodeo) real fast and then come right back home” Thursday. He returned to the Stock Show Sunday and performed a more thorough inspection.
Lawrence and Doris Burke “went up to the Stock Show two or three times just like everybody else did.” The kind citizens are very quotable this week.
Ryan Elshere rode a saddlebronc at the Black Hills Stock Show, where his brother Mr. Average Man JJ did it again, and then the Brothers Elshere and Bryce Miller of Buffalo went to San Antonio, TX over the weekend to compete in a rodeo there.
Clyde Arneson was a dinner guest at the Larry and Peggy Gravatt residence Friday. Larry and Peggy took Madi and Steele Fuegen to the rodeo on Saturday.
The Sam Johnston’s went to Wall Saturday where Calder played in the Badlands Conference junior high basketball tournament for the Wall team, which won three games of three for the trophy.
The Andy Linn’s were guests at the Jamie and Karen Brunsch residence Saturday evening to help celebrate one of the Brunsch children’s birthdays. Young Emily Linn stayed overnight at the Brunsch residence and returned home the next day when the Brunsch’s visited the Linns to watch the Super Bowl.
John, Jean and Jim Linn attended a Super Bowl party at the Gene and Marsha Pluth residence in Rapid City Sunday. It may as well be noted here that Morris, Shirrise and Kassandra Linn and Matt Trask attended the same party.
Shirrise Linn visited the Jack Simons residence near Enning Tuesday afternoon. Wedensday, Roger Shull of Creighton was an overnight guest at the Morris Linn residence. Clyde Arneson was a supper guest Wednesday night. Thursday Cary Tines, Kody DeVries and the Jim and Jen Magee family of Glenrock, WY were dinner guests, and the Magees spent the night. Friday Shirrise and Jen and the girls went to Wall where Kassandra had a piano lesson before they visited Sanden and Elaine Simons and Sandy Van Vleck. The Morris Linns spent the weekend taking in the Stock Show in the company of the Magee’s
The Pauley’s went to the Stock Show “a lot of days,” according to young Mattee Ann. In particular, they were at the Sunday Rodeo watching when Jesse Bail rode a previously unridden bull to win the short go. Also on Sunday, Bud returned from the Anipro convention in Nashville, TN. And young Mayzee bet Bud and Cheryl Burghduff that the Indianapolis Colts would win the Super Bowl. When the Colts won, Mayzee won $15.
Kody DeVries was a guest of the Cary Tines’ Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Amanda Humphrey spent Friday night at the Tines residence, and Matt Trask was a coffee visitor Sunday morning. Throw in a visit each from Clyde Arneson and Morris Linn and that’s the Tines news.
Al and Bridget Trask joined Paul Jr. and Taryn Yantes of Rapid City at the Saturday night Stock Show rodeo. It was a first for both young Mrs. Trask and young Mrs. Yantes, who is from Burnsville, MN.
Pat and Nick Trask went to the Stock Show Monday night, and Pat, Nick, Gemma and Celine attended the Ranch Rodeo at the Stock Show Tuesday night. Brian Herr and friends Scott and Glen of Newton, WI visited the “Upland Trask” residence Tuesday afternoon and Thursday evening while taking in the Stock Show. And Pat Trask was apparently the only kind citizen to attend the Oak Ridge Boys concert at the Civic Center in Rapid City Wednesday night, where he had a great time listening to Richard Durban sing “oombop-a-oombop-a,” you get the idea. Friday morning, the “Upland Trask” breakfast cafe was in full swing, with visits from John Madsen, Andy Linn, Dr. Arlen and Marvin of Rapid City, and a group of coyote hunters from Michigan.
Jim and Carolyn Wilsey went to Rapid City Tuesday to be with Jim’s sister-in-law Thelma Wilsey as she underwent back surgery. They returned Friday to visit Thelma, who is recovering nicely, and then attended the Stock Show rodeo. They attended the rodeo on Sunday as well.
Philip and Mary Kay Wilson went to Wall Tuesday to watch Kelli compete in a gymnastics tournament. Sunday, the Philip Wilsons hosted a Super Bowl Party with the Kenny Wilsons and the “Elk Creek Trasks” in attendance.
The kind citizens say “oombop-a-oombop-a-oombop-a mow mow.”
