Hubba's House - The funniest cowboy in the West

The Elm Springs News

November 27th, 2006

The gorgeous weather in Elm Springs held through Thanksgiving Day, but then got colder as the week progressed. Several houses in Elm Springs were filled to capacity for Thanksgiving dinner, while the kind citizens gave thanks for the fact that they were not fighting fire.

Marvin and Carolyn Anders were very thankful that they had added a sunroom to their house this summer, providing more space for the Rod Anders, the Ted Thompsons, the Scott Sextons, Clint Hufty, Jo Strong, Louisa Lang and Chance and Courtney Trask, who all showed up for Thanksgiving dinner. Marvin and Casey Trask attended a hay auction in Vetal Saturday, while Carolyn met Pam Livermont and Twila Trask for lunch in Wall.

The Clyde Arnesons assembled at the New Underwood Arneson residence for Thanksgiving dinner. Clyde took a different pickup to New Underwood so he wouldn’t have to shift out of four wheel drive. Clyde visited the Ryan Elshere residence for supper Friday.

And Lonnie Arneson met with Gladys Arneson and the Travis Arnesons at the Bill and Shawna Eastman residence near Belle Fourche for Thanksgiving dinner.

Lawrence Burke’s birthday is on the 23rd of November, and periodically it falls on Thanksgiving Day. Such was the case this year, as he and Doris went to Rapid City to eat Thanksgiving dinner with Melissa Burke and a friend. Of course, all of the Burkes are very thankful for Lawrence. On Monday, Lawrence had coffee at the Clyde Arneson residence.

Ryan and Chrissy Elshere joined a host of other Elsheres at the Jim and Lana Elshere residence near Milesville for Thanksgiving dinner.

Lynn and Sandy Fields will probably be very thankful when they are moved into their new house. As it is, they are in transition, and so they enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at the Jason Fields residence in Rapid City. Saturday Lynn and Jason went to St. Onge.

Larry and Peggy Gravatt joined other Gravatts, including Jack, at the Jerry Gravatt residence in Rapid City for Thanksgiving dinner.

Kellie Linn’s parents Jim and Jean Ross of Pueblo CO, arrived at the Andy Linn residence on Monday to spend Thanksgiving week. They were joined for Thanksgiving dinner by Kellie’s aunt Helen Arends and Andy’s uncle Jim Linn. Uncle Jim Linn and Matt Trask were visitors Friday night. Jim and Jean Ross left Saturday.

John and Jean Linn spent Thanksgiving with Charlie and Carol Linn of Rapid City. Charlotte Wilsey and girls spent the weekend at the “Big House.”

Shirrise Linn and Cheryl Simons returned from Rochester, MN, on Thanksgiving Day. Morris and Shirrise hosted Jack and Cheryl Simons, Scott and Lynn Simons and family, Bummer and Jodi Simons and family, Sanden and Elaine Simons and family, Deb and Jaren Brookman, and Clyde Arneson for Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday. On Sunday, the Morris Linns went to the “Big House” to visit Charlotte and the girls before going to (oh my!) cut their Christmas tree.

The Pauleys went to Camp Crook Thursday to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with family at the Rex and Cheryl Burghduff residence. They returned Sunday.

Cary and Pam Tines entertained Grandma Natalie, Joan Racicky, the Dennis Jensens, Kay Williamson Delynn Willis, John, Ty, Coby and Jim Tines, Lexy Northup, David and Kyle Scott, JW and Dara Wrachford and Sean Troxel for Thanksgiving dinner. Evening guests were Matt, Nick, Steph and Julie Trask and Heather Denke.

Al and Bridget Trask visited the “Upland Trask” residence briefly Monday before leaving for Columbus, OH to spend Thanksgiving.

The “Elk Creek Trasks” wrapped up the Dakota Trophies hunt and are now trying to catch their breath. They were joined Sunday by Craig Smith of Colorado, Kenny Wilson and Tyler Trask for a black powder shoot.

The “Upland Trasks” welcomed Steph and John Paul from their respective places Wednesday. Thanksgiving morning, all of them but RoseMary and Matt left for Rapid City to participate in the “Turkey Trot” 5k run. After feeding cows, poor Matt joined his mom for a Thanksgiving dinner of left over steak and spanish rice. But when the “Turkey Trotting Trasks” returned, they all sat down to a proper Thanksgiving meal, Thanksgiving supper perhaps. As Steph will not be able to come home for Christmas, it was decided that a night on the town was in order, and so Matt, Nick, Julie and Steph went to Rapid City Saturday night. Matt decided that he would celebrate his fifth anniversary of not drinking. Oddly enough, Matt does not remember the exact date, but it was in the end of November, 2001. Odder still, this occasion was toasted quite heartily by the other members of his party, who bought him a Roy Rogers. While out on the town they encountered Dace Price, Tony O’neill, and Thomas Paulsen, who Matt hadn’t seen in quite a while. Steph and John Paul left Sunday.

Kenny, Janet and Kelly Wilson went to Rapid City Saturday to celebrate a late Thanksgiving dinner with Mandy Wilson and Justin Tschetter. Tyler Wilson and Heather and Saber Sessions joined them there.

Philip and Mary Kay Wilson hosted their entire family, Amy, Josh and Mary Wolberg, Beth, Patrick and Pam, as well as Kenny and Janet, for Thanksgiving dinner. Friday, they went to Rapid City to attend Jerome Wrights induction party at Blessed Sacrament. And Saturday, Kevin and Joan Howland and boys were guests of the Philip Wilsons.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, we are being pounced on by the Christmas season, so we had just as well start the Christmas announcements now. The Elm Springs Church will have regular services on December 3rd and December 17th. Matt Trask’s guitar students, Ben Linn and Autumn Deering, are giving their Christmas recital, with interference from their teacher, following the December 17th service. The Elm Springs School Christmas program will be held at the Elm Springs Hall on Monday, December 18th around six. And the Elm Springs Church Christmas program will be Friday the 22nd of December at five thirty. These dates will appear in subsequent editions of the ESN.

The term “Thanksgiving dinner” was used 15 times in this week’s ESN.

The kind citizens are very thankful for all of their blessings. And for dinner.

The Elm Springs News

The weather was quite nice in Elm Springs this week.

The Elm Springs schoolchildren, accompanied mostly by their mothers or someone else’s mother, attended the unveiling of the long-awaited South Dakota quarter at a ceremony at Mt. Rushmore Monday. For their troubles, each kid received a free South Dakota quarter, although their mothers had to buy one if they wanted one.

Several of the kind citizens, including Matt Trask, accompanied by Hillary Krogman of Rapid City, attended the Don Williams Farewell Tour concert in Rapid City Tuesday. The sold-out crowd sat enchanted as Mr. Williams plunked his lanky frame in a chair surrounded by his very professional band and sang hit after hit, punctuated with comments like, “well boys, I guess we need to do one more.” Although age might be creeping into Don’s joints, it hasn’t got anywhere near those resonant vocal cords.

Several of the kind citizens seemed to be in a daze when called for news this week, giving vague answers as if they had just woke up.

For example, Marvin and Carolyn Anders went to town “Friday or maybe a different day” for groceries.

Rod and Kelly Anders and kids entertained Matt Trask Friday night. Rod and Kelly went to Deadwood Saturday night while the kids entertained Joe Trask and Tyler Wilson back at the ranch.

Clyde Arneson went to several towns Thursday on business, with the principal destination being Sturgis. Friday morning Clyde realized he’d made the whole trip in four wheel drive.

And Lawrence Burke reported somewhat fuzzily that Clyde was a coffee visitor at the Burke residence “Saturday and another day” and that he and Doris went to town “one day” for “groceries and the like.”

Ryan and Chrissy Elshere went to Philip Friday to attend an NFR send-off party for Ryan’s brother JJ, who will compete in the saddle bronc riding in Las Vegas.

Larry and Peggy Gravatt went to Rapid City Friday where they visited Jack before meeting Brett and Coral Erickson and Madi and Steele at the Outback Steakhouse for a celebration of Larry’s unquantified birthday. Carter Gravatt spent the weekend with Larry and Peggy.

Matt Trask and Uncle Jim Linn were the sole visitors at the Andy Linn residence for the week, both on Wednesday night. Jim was there for supper and Matt was there for a guitar lesson and supper.

John and Jean Linn joined a bus trip to Branson, MO, returning Friday. Kassandra stayed all night at the “Big House” Saturday night.

Max and Sarah Miller left the Cary Tines residence for Wyoming Monday. Throughout the week, John Moore of Sutherland, NE who is staying at the Wilma Moore residence with Wilma, was a frezuent coffee guest at the Cary Tines’. Pam took delivery of several chickens from the Hutterites on Friday, and Saturday, accompanied by Clay Tines and Sammi Stein, she delivered some of them to family in Wyoming.

Of course the “Elk Creek Trasks” plowed through week two of the Dakota Trophies madness, and didn’t have time for much else.

The “Upland Trasks,” in addition to hosting several hunters, had quite a week. RoseMary went to Rapid City for jury duty Tuesday. John Paul Trask left for Wyoming to begin working in the coal mines on Thursday. And Celine Trask attended Autumn Deering’s birthday party in Rapid City on Saturday, while Pat spent the afternoon at the Two Rivers Ranch on an informal tour given by Les Kirkham, who worked their years ago.

In addition to his other wanderings, Matt Trask went to Huron Thursday to watch the #8 Wall Lady Eagles in their first round loss to #1 Arlington at the State B Volleyball championships. The Lady Eagles got eighth place at the tournament. Maria Trask spent Saturday night with Matt, and Matt and Maria had to run to Wasta to pick up the returning Celine.

Tyler Wilson and young Saber were weekend visitors at the Kenny Wilsons and several other people, including Marsha Eisenbraun and Mrs. Curtis, were Sunday visitors.

The kind citizens wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Elm Springs received a rather thick blanket of snow Thursday night and Friday, which was mostly washed away by Saturday’s rain, proving that the weather sure is strange in western South Dakota.

The Elm Springs People Who Play Cards met Wednesday night at the Marvin and Carolyn Anders residence for their monthly Court Whist tournament. Clyde Arneson got the high score for the night, with Jean Linn getting second and Lynn Fields, third.

Prairie deer season opened Saturday morning for rifle hunters, and so once again Elm Springs has turned positively orange. If there seems to be a lack of social news in this week’s ESN, it might have to do with the hunting season.

But before we get to all that, we should report the events of Tuesday. The Brady O’Rourke’s provided a welcome distraction from the midterm elections by carting the two-story Burmeister house through Elm Springs, which required shutting off the electricity for about four hours. From Elm Springs, it went down the hill into Wasta, across the Cheyenne river on the old highway, up the Jensen road to just south of Wall, where it entered the Interstate highway for a half mile or so, and then on in to Quinn.

Lane O’Rourke reports that the move went extremely well, and that the old house was the center of attention wherever it went. It should be noted that at the close of voting on Election Day, the location of the house was about the only thing that had changed.

Many of the Elm Springs schoolchildren and their parents traveled to Keystone and spent the night Sunday.

Marvin and Carolyn Anders attended the Bazaar in Wall on Sunday.

Clyde Arneson and Lawrence Burke went to Buffalo Gap on business Tuesday.

Lawrence and Doris Burke attended Albertine Jensen’s 80th birthday party in Rapid City on Saturday.

The Morris Linns attended Cheryl Simons’ retirement party and honoring in Takini on Wednesday. Cheryl retired from the Takini school after some fifteen years of teaching. Saturday Shirrise and Kassandra went to Rapid City to meet Shelly and Kalee Jepsen for lunch and shopping.

Cary and Pam Tines went to Deadwood Saturday to meet Pam’s parents, Max and Sarah Miller. On Sunday the Millers returned to Elm Springs with the Tines’, spending Sunday night.

Al and Bridget Trask spent Tuesday night in Rapid City, after witnessing the end of the Vote Yes on 6 campaign.

The “Elk Creek Trask” residence came roaring to life as the Dakota Trophies headquarters over the weekend, and will remain at a boil until Thanksgiving. Emma Slovek of Phillip visited Tomilyn over the weekend, and young Mark celebrated his birthday after a fashion amid the deerhunters.

The “Upland Trasks” entertained Todd Trask, Tracy Kluck, Clay Tines, Mike and Shonda Morrison, and a host of deerhunters over the weekend. RoseMary and the Three Little Girls joined other parishoners of St. Margaret’s in Lakeside for the annual Rosary Walk and dinner at the John and Darlene Wulf residence.

Matt Trask went to Rapid City Tuesday to visit his dentist, as he had solemnly promised to do six months ago. Amazingly, no new cavities were found in his poorly kept mouth. After running a few errands around town, Matt went to the Vote Yes on 6 office to help campaign. Upon his arrival, all of the telephones in the building went dead. Matt spent the next hour drinking coffee and eating cookies. Celine Trask spent Saturday night at the Matt Trask residence.

The kind citizens would like to wish Jesse Bail and JJ Elshere and all the other South Dakota contestants best of luck at the National Finals Rodeo.
