Hubba's House - The funniest cowboy in the West

The Elm Springs News

October 29th, 2006

It is now almost November, and soon we will be voting, caroling, eating, gathering, and celebrating. Most of the above are pleasant prospects.

The WTL Club met Monday at the Old Hotel in Wasta. Members present were Margee Willey, Jean, Shirrise and Kellie Linn, RoseMary Trask, Dorothy Anderson, Sandy Fields, Janet Wilson, Linda Tifft, and Joanne Sutton.

And the Elm Springs Halloween Festival was a rescheduled success Sunday afternoon. The weather was so nice that the organizers opted for a costume parade outside. Many thanks to all who attended.

Marvin and Carolyn Anders and the Rod Anders helped the Schells ship calves Saturday, and then they helped Schells eat ribs at the Wasta Bar.

Young Dunbar Anders competed at the US Team Roping Finals in Oklahoma City, OK, with his partner Owen Daneen. He returned Sunday.

Uncle Clyde Arneson picked Carter Elshere up from school on Tuesday afternoon, and Carter spent the afternoon helping Clyde fix fence. Chrissy brought supper for the three of them, which they ate at Clyde’s house.

Melissa Burke and Barry Ellenbecker spent Friday at the Lawrence Burke place, where Melissa went bowhunting.

Larry and Peggy Gravatt hosted Madi and Steele Fuegen over the weekend.

The Andy Linns traveled to McIntosh Sunday to help Bob Campbell celebrate his 40th birthday, which is Tuesday.

And the Morris Linns only have two entries this week, hosting Clyde Arneson and Matt Trask Monday night, and visiting Sanden and Elaine Simons in Wall on Friday.

Jean Linn and Dorothy Anderson attended the Wasta quilting party on Friday.

The Pauley’s went to Buffalo Tuesday, where they watched the Harding County football game and celebrated Mattee Ann’s birthday at aunt Rexene Till’s. Thursday, after helping ship several bunches of calves and visiting Grandma Vigorn in Bowman, ND, they returned to Elm Springs. But their hats weren’t even settled on the rack when they left for the Extreme Rodeo and concert in Rapid City Friday evening, accompanied by Mary Berry and Carlee and Savana Johnston.

Matt Trask, Tracy Kluck and Amanda Humphrey were all dinner guests at the Cary Tines residence Wednesday night.

This week’s big news comes from Al and Bridgets Castle, where they are expecting a new resident sometime in June. The official announcement was made at the “Upland Trask” residence Thursday night. All of the Trasks agreed that what we need is more Trasks. In other Castle news, the skirting continues with help from RoseMary Wednesday, Matt Thursday, and Patrick Wilson Friday and Sunday. Visitors included Lane, Tucker and Jace O’Rourke on Wednesday, and Lawrence Burke and Clyde Arneson Thursday morning. Al and Bridget spent some of the weekend in Rapid City, partly to celebrate Bridget’s Saturday birthday.

And over at the “Upland Trasks,” Steph came home from Colorado Springs, CO, Thursday so that on Saturday she could accompany RoseMary, Matt, Nick, Julie, John Paul and the Three Little Girls to Sioux Falls, where cousin Sarah Eberhard married Sam Hemenway. On the way home Sunday, they visited Sister Magdalena in Alexandria. Throughout the weekend, they had fun guessing what time it was, as they entered the Central Time Zone, then had the time changed back thanks to the foolishness of the Daylight Saving system, and finally returned to the Mountain Time Zone two hours behind where they had been Saturday. Some of them are still confused.

While they were gone, Pat, Joe, Austin and Tracy Kluck had supper at the Red Rock in Wall Saturday night, and Pat, Joe Austin, Al and Bridget had supper in Rapid City Sunday night.

Kenny Wilson had some news, but he forgot it before he could report it.

Melvin and Dorothy Anderson had a big day in the Northern Hills Saturday, going to Spearfish to help grandson Taylor celebrate his 18th birthday and tour the Spearfish Fire Department with grandson and firefighter Ryan Anderson, driving through Spearfish Canyon, doing what they do in Deadwood, and then returning to Spearfish to attend a fundraiser for the High Plains Heritage Center.

The kind citizens wonder where the year has gone.

This past weekend gave the kind citizens an even more authentic dose of winter, as it rained and snowed all weekend. It is truly hard to believe that a place this cold can be so hot in the summertime.

The Elm Springs People Who Play Cards met for the first court whist game of the season at the Jim and Caroline Wilsey residence Wednesday. Matt Trask had so much fun last year as a substitute that he secured a spot as a regular member, taking Janet Wilson’s place as she is living in Wall with Kelli during the schoolweek.

And in what turned out to be their last game of the season, the Wall Eagles were defeated 52-0 by the Philip Scotties Thursday night.

The Elm Springs Rebels Basketball teams took on the Opal Braves Thursday night in Union Center. Elm Springs lost one game.

Marvin and Carolyn Anders met with Casey, Shirley and Chance Trask and Rod and Kelly Anders for supper in Wall Thursday before the football game.

Baxter Anders spent the weekend in Hot Springs visiting his grandparents Vernie and Carolyn Schnose.

Lawrence and Doris Burke hosted Jake Hall for coffee Tuesday morning. Wednesday, Lawrence drove Lynn and Sandy Fields, Matt Trask and Deanne Barber to cards at the Wilsey residence. Clyde Arneson was a coffee visitor Saturday morning, and Saturday night, Lawrence and Doris entertained horses Dan, King, Bud and Dudley in their corral for Cathedral Boy Scout Troop #7. Doris said that having horses in the corral “made us look like rich ranchers from the road.”

Larry and Peggy Gravatt met Jerry and Alyn Gravatt and Barry and Val Gravatt, Wilma Meyer, and several children and grandchildren at the Victorian in Rapid City for Jack Gravatt’s birthday party. Larry and Peggy brought him back to Elm Springs to spend the night for his birthday.

Andy and Kelli Linn drove to Sioux Falls Saturday to meet Kelli’s aunt and uncle, Jerry and Nancy Cole. While they were gone, the Linn children spent the day at the “Big House,” where they had fun making snowmen with pumpkin heads. Andy, with permission from his kids, loaned to the Boy Scouts the use of horses Jerry, Pilgrim and Whiskey for the weekend. Matt Trask visited the Andy Linn residence Sunday night to give Ben his guitar lesson.

In addition to hosting the kids Saturday, John and Jean Linn had supper with Charlie and Carol Linn in Rapid City Tuesday.

Clyde Arneson was a supper guest at the Morris Linn residence Monday. Tuesday afternoon Kassandra stayed at the “Big House” in the company of Uncle Jim Linn. Wednesday Shirrise went to Rapid City where she had lunch at the Charlotte Wilsey residence. Jean Linn visited the Morris Linns Thursday, and Sandy Van Vleck stayed all night Friday. Sunday evening the Morris Linns hosted Matt, Nick, Julie and John Paul Trask, JW and Dara Wrachford, and Clyde Arneson.

Laramie Opstedahl visited the Bud Pauley residence Thursday. Saturday, Dorothy Anderson visited the Pauley’s where she showed the girls how to embroider.

Matt and Julie Trask were Friday visitors at Al and Bridget’s Castle. Saturday, Al invited Patrick Wilson and Morris Linn over to help him put the skirting on the Castle, but the project was aborted due to the weather.

The Cathedral Boy Troop #7 enjoyed their stay on the Pat Trask ranch so much last year that they agreed to do it again this year, and so on a miserable Friday, Brett, Andy and Micheal Hanson, Cory and David Verhye, Elka and Cody Kopriva and Dean Hade arrived at the “Upland Trask” residence ready for a campout. Matt Trask, displaying his brilliance, suggested that they stay at his place since the weather was much too nasty for an out-of-doors camping experience. The Scouts agreed to this suggestion, and in no time at all, Matt had a meal cooked in his garage which he was invited to share, and coffee on the stove. And since their was rain water on the garage floor, the Scouts quickly set to work and repaired Matt’s garage door, a project which in almost two years Matt had not found the inclination to attempt. Saturday morning after breakfast, Matt helped the Scouts understand that camping elsewhere Saturday night would be unpleasant as well, and so leaving their gear in Matt’s garage, they saddled horses and rode in the wind and cold helping Matt move cattle all day long. They returned to the Matt Trask residence Saturday night to keep him fed and entertained until Sunday morning, and the Hansons even stayed beyond that to help him move some more cows. The whole weekend, several of the Scouts kept up a running discussion as to why Matt does not have a wife, which Matt found hilarious. If Matt would only use his intellect for good, he might make the world a better place.

Bobby, Dorothy and Brian Herr of Newton, WI spent parts of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the “Upland Trask” residence. On Friday, Celine Trask had all of the Elm Springs schoolgirls and Cheyenne and Autumn Deering over for a gigantic birthday party, which included foosball, cake and screaming. Morris Linn visited the “Upland Trask” residence Friday night. Saturday, Al and Bridget had supper at the “Upland Trask” residence to celebrate Al and Celine’s birthdays, albeit more sedately. Al and Celine were both born on the 20th of October, fifteen years apart.

Shelia and Mick Trask went to Sioux Falls Friday, where Mick underwent knee surgery. Emma Slovek of Philip was a guest of Tomilyn Trask at the “Elk Creek Trask” residence over the weekend. On Sunday, the “Elk Creek Trasks” had a birthday party for Tom, with th Bud Pauleys, the Philip Wilsons, the Kenny Wilsons, and Paul Williams of Philip in attendance.

Pam Wilson returned from Brookings to spend the weekend at the Philip Wilson residence.

And Tyler Wilson returned to Newcastle, WY from the Kenny Wilson residence Wednesday.

The Elm Springs Fall/Halloween Festival has been moved from Saturday October 28th at five to Sunday October 29th beginning with the jack-o-lantern contest at noon. In all other respects it will be the same, although it may be less spooky in the light of day.

The kind citizens would like to thank Cathedral Boy Scout Troop #7 for keeping Matt Trask out of their hair over the weekend.

The Elm Springs News

October 16th, 2006

The kind citizens woke up Wednesday morning to find a healthy blanket of snow on the ground in Elm Springs. Most of it was gone by noon Wednesday, and the weather steadily improved throughout the rest of the week. Indeed, the Good Lord doesn’t make too many days like the Sunday we had.

Several of the kind citizens attended the WREA annual meeting in Wall on Saturday, to get their free meal and elect officers.

And the Elm Springs Rebels basketball teams competed in five games against the Enning Eagles Thursday in Union Center, winning four.

The kind citizens have been rather busy getting their cows squared away for the winter, and consequently did not have much time for social activities.

Clyde Arneson visited the Lawrence Burke residence for coffee Monday morning, “after about a three week absence,” says Doris.

The Sam Johnstons, or some of them, were dinner guests of the Anders, Saturday and possibly Sunday as well.

Matt Trask was a supper and movie guest at the Andy Linn residence Friday night.

Shirrise and Kassandra Linn went to Rapid City Monday, where they had lunch with Dana Keffeler and her kids before visiting Grandma Arlene Talley. Matt Trask stayed Monday night at the Morris Linn residence, so that he would be on time to accompany Morris and Andy to the Roger Shull residence Tuesday morning. Saturday, Amy Wicks and her girls spent the afternoon at the Morris Linn residence. Sunday, Morris visited the Bummer Simons residence while Shirrise and Kassandra attended Misty Walker’s stamp party. The Morris Linns returned home to host Nick Trask for supper.

The Bud Pauleys went to Piedmont Saturday night to attend the wedding of Casey Kersteen to Cary Funk. After the reception in Rapid City, they stayed all night. Sunday they had breakfast with friends from Oglala, NE before going swimming.

Cary and Pam Tines hosted Clyde Arneson and Morris Linn for coffee Wednesday morning, and Bud and Bunny Pauley for coffee Friday morning.

Al and Bridget Trask returned to the Castle from Ohio Wednesday. Upon arriving, they discovered that several cows had gotten into the courtyard, tipped over a bucket of used motor oil, and managed to smear it on the propane tank. While it is clear that there were cows in the courtyard, the rest of the story may have been fabricated to some degree. Matt Trask had dinner at the Castle Thursday.

In other news, RoseMary and Bridget Trask and the Three Little Girls spent parts of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday passing out fliers and hanging signs in support of the Vote Yes on 6 campaign, which pertains to the abortion ban in South Dakota. They have been seen in Wall, Wasta, New Underwood, Rapid City and points in between engaged in this work.

Jeff Nelson and Dave DeRosier left the “Upland Trask”residence Tuesday afternoon, bound for Manitowoc, WI. Pat attended a political discussion in Spearfish Friday. Sunday, several of the “Upland Trasks” visited the “Big Green Trask House” in Wall.

In addition to guitar lessons Monday and Tuesday, Matt Trask visited the Mike Heathershaw residence Sunday afternoon, under the pretence that he was returning a cattle panel. He traded the panel for a bag of chocolate chip cookies, and after a pleasant visit, had a marvelous time driving home eating chocolate chip cookies, drinking a family-sized fountain Coke, and singing along to Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” at the top of his lungs because it was October and also because he could.

There are two announcements this week. The first, which will be reprinted next week, is that the Elm Springs Fall/Halloween Festival will be held on Saturday, the 28th of October starting at 5 pm with the jack-o-lantern contest in the fire hall. The indian taco supper begins at 6 in the Hall, followed by a costume contest, bingo, silent auction, cake walk and relay race. In short, it will be fun for the whole family.

The second announcement is that the Elm Springs Church will hold it’s next service on Sunday, November 5th at 2 pm.

The kind citizens hope that Matt Trask will grow up someday soon.

The kind citizens enjoyed another beautiful week of weather as they went about their fall tasks.

Chance Trask accompanied Marvin and Carolyn Anders, who left Tuesday to attend the draft horse sale in Waverly, IA. They returned Friday in time to watch the Wall Eagles beat Jones County High School in their football game.

Clyde Arneson was a coffee guest at the Cary Tines residence Thursday morning.

Lawrence and Doris Burke had an afternoon in Union Center Thursday, eating at the Bull Creek Cafe and getting Doris’ hair done at PrHairie Country Cut n Curl.

Ryan Elshere and Brandon west competed in a rodeo in Minot ND Friday. On Sunday, Paul and Joy and Jim and Lana Elshere spent the afternoon at the Ryan Elshere residence.

Charlotte Wilsey and the girls arrived at the “Big House” Saturday and spent the weekend.

Morris and Shirrise Linn went to Rapid City Monday where they visited Charlotte Wilsey and had supper with Peg Ireland before picking Kassandra up at the Bud Pauley residence and returning home. Wednesday night the Morris Linns stayed at the Gene Pluth residence in Rapid City so that Kassandra would be ready for her tonsilectomy at 7:30 am. The bulletproof Kassandra was eating macaroni and cheese and french fries at 11:00 am, and has not shown any adverse effects from her surgery. On Friday Gene Pluth was a dinner guest of the Morris Linns. Shirrise visited the Sam Johnston residence and the Ryan Elshere residence Saturday to wish both couples a happy anniversary. Kassandra visited the “Big House” Saturday afternoon to play with the Wilsey girls. Sunday the Morris Linns attended a baptismal lunch for young Andoryn Walker at the Brian Walker residence.

Al and Bridget Trask left Friday for Columbus OH to attend the baptism of young Blaise Madrid, son of Jonathan and Kelly Madrid. Al and Bridget served as godparents. While they were gone, various “Upland Trasks” tended to the Castle.

Julie Trask returned to the “Upland Trask” residence from Ft. Collins CO Thursday. The “Upland Trasks” hosted hunters Rick Wolke and friend Andy and Jim Doyle and friend Todd, all of Rapid City, and Jeff Nelson and Dave DeRosier of Manitowoc, WI over the weekend. Mr Nelson and Mr. DeRosier accompanied the “Upland Trasks” to Mt. Rushmore Sunday afternoon.

Matt Trask spent Tuesday night at the Joe Deering residence for no particular reason whatsoever. On Friday he attended the wedding of Matt Kelly to Amanda O’Dea in Whitewood. Matt and Austin Trask visited the Cary Tines residence briefly Saturday afternoon. But Matt really warmed up on Sunday, first visiting the Cary Tines residence for coffee in the morning, then resting up during the middle of the day so that he would have the energy to visit the Laura Jean Gunn residence for cake, attend the Walk Through Wasta function and perhaps more importantly, the potluck supper, and then visit the Larry Schell residence for tea and conversation with Larry, Terry and Billie Hulm. He was thoroughly exhausted when he got home.

The Wilson brothers, with help from several kind citizens, moved their cows home from the Pipal place Friday and Saturday. This years drive, which passes right through everyone’s favorite town of Wasta, went without incident, although it was hampered by rather high termperatures.

Kenny, Janet, and Kelli Wilson attended the Walk Through Wasta function Sunday.

And Mary Kay Wilson, whose musical talent has gone unsung in the ESN, if you will excuse the pun, received an organ on Sunday, which she has “fallen in love with,” according to her husband Philip. But Philip readily admits that he has developed a certain fondness for the instrument himself, especially since it is much lighter than it’s cousin the piano.

Melvin and Dorothy Anderson entertained George Deering of Colorado Tuesday morning. Friday they attended the funeral of Eleanor “Babe” Garreaux in Eagle Butte. And Saturday they went to Keystone, where they met Lisa, Ben and Kacey Kraft and rode the 1880 Train. Saturday evening the Andersons and several pieces of their cake entertained Matt Trask.

The kind citizens wish Mary Kay and her organ a long and happy life together.

Occasionally there are weeks when hardly any of the kind citizens are home to report what they did. Such was the case this week, so we’ll have to make do with what we got.

The “Upland Trasks” had a late breakfast in Rapid City Sunday morning to say goodbye to Julie, who left for Ft. Collins, and to celebrate RoseMary’s birthday a day early. Darlene Wulf visited the “Upland Trask” residence Sunday afternoon to bring RoseMary a birthday cake.

Kenny, Philip, and Patrick Wilson took a motorcycle excursion through Spearfish Canyon Sunday and unexpectedly encountered JW and Dara Wrachford and Monte and Loni Reichert doing the same thing.

JW and Dara Wrachford are now retired from the U.S. Air Force, with an official retirement ceremony on Thursday at Ellsworth AFB and an unofficial ceremony Saturday night in New Underwood. Both were well attended. A newly aquired rooster now calls reveille at the “Brustol AFB.” Sean Troxel and Clay Tines made a trip to Rapid City Friday.

The Elm Springs Church will hold services Sunday, October 8th at 2 pm.

The kind citizens hope your weather has been as nice as theirs.
