The Elm Springs News
The kind citizens ended a week of high winds and high temperatures with a small rainshower, which turned to hail in places, damaging several meadows on the Belle Fourche river bottom and several of Lonnie Arneson’s new windows. Once again this year, it seems the pessimists have a point.

And although the “Upland Trasks” went like a house afire all week long, most of the rest of it did not amount to much.

The Elm Springs News
The weather here in Elm Springs has begun to rise to alarming temperatures, while laundry rooms in the community take on the odors of burnt hair and calf scours.
The Elm Springs schoolchildren competed at County Rally Day in Sturgis Tuesday, and did very well indeed.
It was very unfortunate for the kind citizens that the schools of New Underwood and Wall chose to hold their graduation exercises on the same afternoon, with only one half hour’s difference in starting times. The kind citizens, most of whom knew someone who graduated from each, were forced to choose which exercise to attend. Some multiple-person households divided the personnel, so that the household was represented at both. It is hoped that that never happens again.
At any rate, six of Elm Springs’ finest received their diplomas on Saturday. In Wall, Mr. John Paul Trask and Ms. Pam Wilson received theirs, and in New Underwood, Mr. Coby Tines, Mr. Sean Troxel and Ms. Kelsey Arneson received theirs, and in Rapid City, at the First Assembly of God church, Mr. Gary Smith received his from Rapid City Christian. Ms Wilson, it should be noted, was valedictorian of the Wall High School class of 2006. The kind citizens are very proud of all of them.

The lovely Ms. Bridget Madrid spent the entire week at the “Upland Trask” residence, which made Mr. Al Trask very happy indeed. At all times of the day and night during the week, spare “Upland Trasks” spent their time filling envelopes with wedding invitations. Pat, RoseMary, John Paul and Joe Trask all attended the Athletic Banquet in Wall Friday night. John Paul then spent the night at the Jem Kjerstad residence. Most of the “Upland Trasks,” Ray Olsen, and visiting cousin Steve Bucher went to Wall to watch “little paul-pauley,” as his mother used to call him, graduate. John Paul’s reception was held in the Wall Community Center, and afterwards, various “Upland Trasks” went here and there to other receptions.
Matt Trask visited the Andy Linn residence Thursday evening for Ben’s guitar lesson. On Saturday, the often forgetful John Paul, already in Wall, realized that his cap and gown were still in Elm Springs, so Matt was commissioned to go to Wall early so that John Paul would get his cap and gown in a timely fashion. After the graduation, Matt availed himself of the celebratory goodwill of Wall and the surrounding countryside, even enlisting the aid of his uncle Milton, before going home satisfied that he had done his part to rid the world of cake. On Sunday, Matt attended a Wasta Centennial Committee meeting. It almost goes without saying that Matt made a ridiculous number of stops at the way-cool Dixie Diner.
Pam Tines accompanied Cary on his second fish haul into Canada during the first part of the week. The Tines’ of course attended the New Underwood graduation, where young Coby graduated. On Sunday, the Tines’ and the Wrachfords made strenuous last-minute preparations for Coby Tines’ and Sean Troxel’s graduation reception at the Elm Springs Hall in the afternoon, which was well attended by family and friends and classmates.

And on Sunday, Melvin and Dorothy had dinner with Slim and Darlene McNaught at the way-cool Dixie Diner.
Once again, the Elm Springs Memorial Day program will be at 2 pm Monday, May 29th at the Elm Springs Church.
The kind citizens are getting very busy.

The Elm Springs News
Lawrence Burke said it best when he remarked (rather drily) that “we have not been blessed with an overabundance of rain.”
In all other respects the weather here in Elm Springs has been gorgeous, so that waiting for our “overabundance” has not been unpleasant.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders attended the high school rodeo in Wall on Saturday and in New Underwood on Sunday.
While Baxter Anders competed in the rodeos in Wall and New Underwood, Kelly and Jonnie Jo Anders went to a barrel racing competition in Cody, WY over the weekend, where Kelly competed.

Larry and Peggy Gravatt had Mother’s Day dinner at the Enigma Restaurant in Rapid City before watching Madi Fuegen and the Prima Dance School perform the “Enchanted Forest” ballet, uh, deal at the Civic Center.

Tuesday Shirrise visited at the Jack and Cheryl Simons residence. Cary Tines accompanied Morris Linn to Rapid City on Thursday, while Shirrise and Kassandra visited Sandy Van Vleck and Sanden and Elaine Simons. Shirrise and Kassandra attended Katie Wilsey’s tap dance recital in Rapid City on Friday. Saturday, Jack Simons came down from Enning to pick up Kassandra, who stayed all night at the Simons residence while Morris and Shirrise, accompanied by Matt Trask (don’t they ever get tired of having him around?) went to Rapid City where they met Bummer and Jodi Simons, Cary and Pam Tines, JW and Dara Wrachford, Sam and Rita Gebhart, and Anthony Fisher at Applebees prior to attending the Ron White comedy show at the Civic Center. Mr. Fisher did not sit with the rest of the party, by virtue of the fact that he purchased his ticket directly before the show. Cheryl Simons visited the Morris Linn residence on Sunday.
Put on your helmets kiddies, it’s time for an old fashioned, action packed “Upland Trask” segment of the ESN. Al Trask returned from Canada just in time to pick up the lovely Ms. Bridget Madrid at the Rapid City Airport on Tuesday. The rest of the week they spent here and there, but most importantly in each others company, visiting the Elm Springs School, the Eudell Larsen residence, Fr. Leo Hausmann in Wall, etc, etc. Steph Trask returned to Elm Springs from Nebraska Saturday morning, just in time to help make final preparations for Ms. Madrids bridal shower, held Saturday afternoon on “Grandma’s Porch” and attended by Jean, Kelli and Shirrise Linn, Darlene and Kayla Wulf, Shelia an Tomilyn Trask, Lane O’Rourke, Sandy Fields, Doris Burke, Chrissy and Camry Elshere, Dara Wrachford, Pam Tines, and Peggy Gravatt and all of the “Upland Trask” girls and women. The standards by which a bridal shower is judged apparently are quality of food and drink, quality of gifts received, quality and sufficiency of entertainment, and quality of the setting, and the “Upland Trask” bridal shower received high marks in all of the above categories. Pat, RoseMary and Steph Trask visited the Jack Cole residence near Spearfish Saturday night. On Sunday, RoseMary and John Paul attended the Wall High School baccalaureate Mass in Wall. Later all of the “Upland Trasks” had Mother’s Day dinner at the Enigma Restaurant in Rapid City before going to visit Mrs. Mary Zandri. Tyler Wilson visited the “Upland Trask” residence over the weekend.
Matt Trask, who is trying to adopt a more thorough dental hygiene regimen, went to Gayville Monday on business. There is nothing funny about that. Everything else that he did has already been reported elsewhere in the ESN
Ashley Wilsey visited at the Jim Wilsey residence Sunday night on her way home from the school year at SDSM&T.
Young Tyler Wilson began a few-days stay in Elm Springs on Friday. Janet and Mary Kay Wilson, Darlene Wulf, and Linda Tifft began work at the Wasta rest area for the tourist season on Saturday.

The Elm Springs Cemetery Clean-Up day is Tuesday, May 23rd at 5 pm, with a potluck supper following. And it is not too early to mention the Memorial Day Program, which will be held Monday, May 29th at the Elm Springs Church. The Memorial Day Program usually starts at 2 pm.
The kind citizens hope your weather has been as nice as theirs.

The kind citizens began their week with another day of snow and blustering, and spent the rest of the week in intermittent gentle rain showers. Estimates of how much moisture we received varied considerably and depended largely on where you were standing.
Young Maria Trask represented Elm Springs very well at the Special Olympics in Spearfish Friday. Her teacher Peggy Gravatt took her up the night before, where they had great fun eating at the Pizza Ranch and staying at a motel with a swimming pool. The next day Maria, sporting her new pink running shoes, took 1st in the footrace and 2nd in both the ball-throw and the long jump. The Elm Springs School “lower room kids” and their parents were there to cheer her on.
Kelli Wilson and Mary Berry cleaned house at the county Civic Oration Contest in Sturgis Wednesday, with Ms. Wilson getting first and Ms. Berry getting 2nd. They both went to Chamberlain on Thursday to compete in the State competition.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders went to Rapid City Thursday to keep appointments, and when they had finished, visited Junior and Mary Cress.
Clyde Arneson went with Morris Linn to Wall on business Thursday, joined his brother Lonnie and Matt Trask for supper at the Ryan Elshere residence Thursday night, and was joined by Matt Trask for coffee at the Cary Tines residence Saturday morning.

Weekend visitors at the Brady O’Rourke residence included Chick Johnston of Interior, Jiggs and Shane O’Connell of Rapid City and Mr. Prince Charming himself, Al Trask.
After Matt left Saturday morning, Connie Arneson took his coffee spot at the Cary Tines residence.
Visitors to the “Upland Trasks” during the week included Dr. Jim McDougal of Aberdeen, Coby and Clay Tines, and Sean Troxel. On Sunday, the “Upland Trasks” traveled across the state in the rain to visit Sr. Magdalena of Jesus Crucified. They spent two hours talking with her before eating in Mitchell and returning home.
Matt Trask has fallen into a very predictable and very enjoyable routine. Thus we have Andy and Ben’s visit to his house Thursday evening, the Guitar for Food Program at the Ryan Elshere residence Thursday night, which happily coincided with Steak and Crab Night, Wade Wulf and Kevin Tifft and guitars visiting his house Saturday night, coffee at the Cary Tines residence Saturday morning, a morning visit to the Ray Olson residence some other day, and two or three trips to the Morris Linn residence. It’s all good.
From the “Big House,” Jean Linn reports that Elm Springs received 2.31” of precipitation during the month of April. Of course, precipitation amounts can and do very within the community, but as a relative indicator, Jean Linn’s gauge is irrefutable.
The kind citizens say amen to that.
