The Elm Springs News
What little snow the kind citizens received in last week’s system mostly blew away it seems, leaving only damp spots here and there. The weather since then, while maybe a tad windy, has been gorgeous.
Jean Linn, Dorothy Anderson, Sandy Fields and Caroline Wilsey joined the Wasta Quilting Ladies at their monthly meeting Monday.
Milton and Twila Trask accompanied Marvin and Rod Anders on a Saturday drive around the Plainview area. Sunday, JD, Pam, and Hadley Livermont and Rod and Kelly Anders were all dinner guests at the Marvin Anders residence, where “several birthdays were celebrated,” says Carolyn. Who exactly celebrated a birthday, and how many they celebrated are unanswered questions.
“One day there, early in the week,” said Clyde Arneson, “I coffeed at Cary’s (Tines), and later in the week, I coffeed at LB’s (Lawrence Burke).”
Lawrence Burke remembers that Clyde stopped for coffee twice during the week, but he can’t remember specific days any better than Clyde can. On Friday, Doris Burke was admitted to the hospital in Rapid City, where she stayed until Sunday night, when Lawrence brought her back. The kind citizens are glad to have her. Lawrence Burke attended the Ag Banquet in Sturgis Saturday, which John and Jean Linn also attended.

Matt Trask stopped by that evening to sniff out the cookies that Roger and young Kassandra had made a feeble attempt to hide from him. Chuck and Sandy Van Vleck of Wall were visitors at the Morris Linns Friday. On Saturday, Shirrise and Kassandra attended young Jade Graham’s birthday skating party in Union Center. Sunday, Shirrise attended a stamp party near Red Owl while Kassandra spent the afternoon with Jack and Cheryl Simons. And Melissa Byrne was a visitor Sunday afternoon.
Matt, Nick and John Paul Trask were visitors at the Cary Tines residence Sunday night.
Young Al Trask has now been in Washington, DC for a week. The “Upland Trasks” received word from him that a bout with the flu has retarded his progress in finding a job, but trivial details don’t seem to bother the man these days.
Back at the “Upland Trask” ranch, several family members were fighting the same flu over the weekend. Steph and Julie attended the wedding of Michelle Garcia to Mark Monroe in Valentine NE over the weekend. The two sang “The Rose” at the ceremony, prudently leaving Matt, his guitar and his appetite in South Dakota where they belong. John Paul Trask, meanwhile, competed in the State “B” wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls over the weekend, going out to eat one night with the “Elk Creek Trasks” whose boy Mark also competed. Pat and Matt Trask and the Three Little Girls ran errands in Rapid City Saturday. Pat and Steph Trask visited the “Big Green Trask House” in Wall Sunday evening.

The kind citizens hope you don’t catch this flu.

Old Man winter finally came to Elm Springs, and heavens to betsy, he came with a vengeance. Saturday morning, most of the kind citizen’s thermometers registered twenty to thirty degrees below zero on the Farenheit scale. Such bone-chilling cold put a damper on social activities, to be sure.
The Elm Springs schoolchildren had their annual ski trip to Terry Peak on Monday. Terry Peak, and all of the Northern Hills, are having an incredible snow year, and the children and their parents had great fun zooming down the hills.
And the Elm Springs schoolchildren had a Valentine’s Day party at the Elm Springs school on Wednesday.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders, accompanied by Casey and Shirley Trask, managed to have some fun on a business trip, first to Sioux Falls and then to various points in Nebraska, stopping most notably in Lexington, NE to visit former South Dakotans Kenny and Lisa Wood.
Austin Trask accompanied Baxter Anders to the well-fought Wall/Phillip boys basketball game Friday night.
When called for news, Doris Burke said “well, we didn’t do anything fun or entertaining around here this week,” and her husband Lawrence added “we didn’t even do anything boring!”
Ryan and Chrissy Elshere hosted Clyde Arneson Sunday night for supper.
Kellie and Emily Linn attended the Winter Women’s Retreat in Rapid City over the weekend.
Even the Morris Linns had a sedate week. Matt Trask was a supper guest Monday night. Kody DeVries and Clyde Arneson were supper guests Wednesday night. Sandy Van Vleck was a visitor Friday, and John and Jean Linn stopped Saturday afternoon for cookies, taking Kassandra with them when they left. And that’s it.

Kody DeVries was a guest at the Cary and Pam Tines residence Thursday and Friday nights. Matt Trask visited the Cary Tines residence Friday night.
Tuesday morning dawned cold and dreary in Elm Springs, and the weather was probably about the same in Al Trask’s heart as once again he saw the lovely Ms. Bridget Madrid off to the airport. But young Al Trask, who is no longer quiet or reserved at all, continues to hog all the headlines in the ESN. This latest one is a showstopper. Please pay careful attention; Wednesday morning Al Trask left the “Upland Trask” residence, bound for Columbus OH, where he was reunited with Ms. Bridget Madrid at the 25th wedding anniversary party of his future in-laws Mr. And Mrs. Partick and Nancy Madrid. From there, Al will drive to Washington, DC, where he will live for an undetermined amount of time to be closer to Ms. Bridget. Before your tongues start wagging, two things should be noted. First, being good young Catholics both, they will live in separate residences. And second, once they are married, they do intend to move back to South Dakota.
Back at the “Upland Trask” ranch, the remnants of the once-mighty horde struggle on. John Paul and Joseph Trask competed in the regional wrestling tournament in Ft. Pierre, which Pat attended and where John Paul earned a spot at the state wrestling tournament by winning first in his weight class; and several of the “Upland Trasks” went to Alexandria to visit “Sister Rebecca,” as they are now supposed to call her, as her birthday was Friday. Sister Rebecca seems to have found her place, and will pass from a postulant to a novitiate in a special ceremony on March 25th. She sends her best to all. Visitors at the “Upland Trasks” included Jim Anderson, Morris Linn, Coby Tines, Todd Jaquot and a host of coyote hunters.

Philip Wilson attended a South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts leadership conference Wednesday and Thursday in Chamberlain. Mary Kay accompanied Pam Wilson to the state gymnastics meet in Huron Friday and Saturday.
The kind citizens hope it warms up around here.

Our unseasonably warm weather has been punctuated by biting roaring winds, and it is always amazing how quickly one gets tired of biting roaring winds.
The Cheryl Simons fundraiser was a big success Sunday night, and most of the kind citizens attended. The Rev. Harold Delbridge was the emcee, and young Kassandra Linn, much to the Reverends surprise, drew his name in the rifle raffle. Being the sterling character that he is, he donated it back to be auctioned off, and then auctioned it himself.
Matt Trask was a guest at the Marvin Anders residence Friday night.
Richard Johnston visited the Lawrence Burkes for coffee Monday afternoon, Pam Tines and Jack Gravatt visited Tuesday afternoon, and Clyde Arneson visited Thursday morning. Friday, Lawrence and Doris went to Rapid City, where they had lunch with daughter Melissa.

The Morris Linns had a very busy week, on the heels of last week which was even busier. Morris went to Belle Fourche in the company of Clyde Arneson and Cary Tines on Monday. Tuesday, Shirrise helped out at Jack and Cheryl Simons. Wednesday, Shirrise and Kassandra visited Charlotte Wilsey in Rapid City before going to Wall where Shirrise hosted a stamping party at the Juanita Schroeder residence while Kasssandra visited at Sanden and Elaine’s. Thursday, Shirrise visited Misty and Statler Walker in Union Center while Morris took Kassandra to her piano lesson in Wall, visiting at the Chuck Van Vleck residence. Saturday, the Morris Linns went to Wood where they helped Jim and Shelly Jepsen unpack their belongings. The Linns stayed overnight at the new Jim Jepsen residence before hustling back to help with the Cheryl Simons benefit. Shirrise would like to thank everyone who helped make it a success.
Thursday, young Emilee Pauley received the saddle that she won last year. Donated by Lemmon Livestock, it says “Lemmon Series 2005 All Around Champ: Emilee Pauley.”
Jim Smith attended the Ben Kinney funeral in Sturgis during the first part of the week.
Sunday afternoon, Jim, Myrna and Melanie Smith visited the “Upland Trasks.”
The “Upland Trasks” had another doozy, too. Matt and Steph Trask left Monday morning for the Nebraska Alfalfa Marketers Association Trade Show, manning a booth for two days. At the conclusion of the trade show, Matt returned to Elm Springs while Steph went to Hyannis NE to work for the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska. It should possibly be noted that on his way home, Matt stopped at the somewhat famous Young’s Western Wear store in Valentine NE, where he felt compelled to buy a shirt after demanding the attention of half the sales staff for a full hour. One astute saleswoman, apparently sensing that Matt is an impulsive buyer, rounded up a scarf that matched the shirt and sold him that as well.
Back at the ranch, Emil Magnusson of Rapid City visited Wednesday. The lovely Ms. Bridget Madrid arrived Thursday night, to be greeted of course by her Prince Charming, who had better luck with his tires this time, and a bushel basket of wine-red roses. The two spent the weekend at a couples retreat at St. Martins, returning to the ranch Sunday evening. Friday evening Pat, RoseMary, and Nick attended an anniversary party for Dr. Jerry and Shirley Soderstrom at their home in Rapid City. On Saturday Pat went to Pierre, while John Paul and Joseph Trask competed in the district wrestling meet where they both qualified for the regional wrestling tournament. It should be noted that cousins Mark and Mick, wrestling for Philip, also qualified for the regional tournament. A sizeable contingent of “Upland Trasks” visited the “Big Green Trask House” for coffee and donuts Sunday morning after church. As proof that miracles do happen, the donuts were provided by none other than Matt Trask. A smaller contingent of “Upland Trasks” attended a birthday party for Don Lefevre in Rapid City Sunday.
Celine Trask stayed overnight Saturday at the Matt Trask residence. Matt attended the Wasta Centennial Committee meeting Sunday in Wasta, and then took a tour of the soon to open Dixie Diner. The prospect of a diner in everyone’s favorite town of Wasta excites Matt greatly. Sunday evening visitors at the Matt Trask residence were Nick and Al Trask, Bridget Madrid, and Kody DeVries.
Don and Joan Thorson of Keystone visited the Jim Wilsey residence Tuesday.
Kenny Wilson turned 50 years old on Saturday. Kenny’s 50th birthday party was held on Sunday, and was very well attended by family, friends and kind citizens.
The Philip Wilsons, the Kenny Wilsons, the “Elk Creek Trasks,” and Amy and little Mary Wolberg of Eden Prairie MN attended the Wall Lady Eagles gymnastics meet in Wall on Friday, where young Pam Wilson qualified for the state competition in all four events, adding another star to the Elm Springs constellation. It should be noted that young Randi Moore of Wall qualified for state as a 7th grader.
