The weather here in Elm Springs refuses to be newsworthy, so without further comment, we go to the news.

Several of the kind citizens attended the Nachtigall Bull Sale on Monday.

And several of the kind citizens attended the Ag Appreciation Banquet in Wall Friday night. Being agricultural types, they probably felt very appreciated.

Clyde Arneson entertained Matt Trask and Dustin Reeves at separate times Monday morning for coffee. Saturday Clyde and Connie went to Belle Fourche to visit their parents.

Lawrence and Doris Burke entertained Duane Keffeler of Enning Monday evening, Clyde Arneson Tuesday morning, and Matt Trask Friday evening.

Kody DeVries picked up his friend Dave Hoogers of Sheldon, IA in Wall on Friday. Dave spent the weekend with Kody while his brother took in the Stock Show. The very busy Matt Trask was a breakfast guest Saturday morning at the Kody DeVries residence.

Jack Gravatt hosted a slew of relatives and guests, among them, Jerry Gravatt on Friday, Jim and Myrna Smith and Andy Linn and kids on Saturday, and Byron and Cherry Denke on Sunday.

Sam Johnston left Thursday for Brazil, where he will spend two weeks touring with the SDARL crew. Cary and the kids meanwhile, stayed overnight at the “Big Green Trask House” in Wall Friday night after the basketball game, and went tubing at Deer Mountain with the Kling family Saturday night.

Ben Linn began guitar instruction under the tutelage of the talentless Matt Trask Thursday, at the Matt Trask residence. Let us hope that Matt doesn’t teach young Ben anything that he is good at. Kellie Linn visited the Kim Smiley residence near Red Owl Saturday. And Sunday morning, Matt Trask visited the Linns in his pickup, Pat and Julie visited on foot, and Joe arrived in the van.

It was not reported last week that John and Jean Linn left Saturday for Conroe, TX to visit family. They have not returned.

Shirrise Linn and Cheryl Simons visited Arlene Talley in Rapid City on Monday. Tuesday, Shirrise joined Misti Walker in Rapid City for lunch. Thursday, Shirrise took Kassandra to Wall for piano lessons and then to visit Sanden and Elaine Simons. Friday the Morris Linns visited Charlotte Wilsey and the girls before meeting with Jim and Jen Magee and family at the Stock Show. Saturday the Linns and Magees visited Cabela’s in Mitchell. Sunday they visited Sanden and Elaine Simons on the way home. Clyde Arneson was a guest at the Morris Linns Sunday evening.

Cary, Pam and Ty Tines took Natalie Termes out to supper in Rapid City Saturday night. Matt, Nick and Al Trask, Tracy Kluck and Kody DeVries were all visitors at the Cary Tines residence Sunday night.

Pat Trask returned from Wisconsin Tuesday morning. Thursday Nick Trask went to Interior on business. John Paul and Joseph Trask attended a wrestling tournament in Oneida over the weekend. Pat, Steph and Julie Trask met Bob Hale in Rapid City Sunday night to tour his Sommerset retirement home, while Nick visited the Ray Olsen residence. Visitors at the “Upland Trasks” for the week were, in no particular order, Danny Arneson, Ray Olsen, Morris Linn, Sean Troxel, Clay Tines, John and Mauri Bestgen, Theresa Bruch, a kid named Kelly, and Kenny, Janet and Kelli Wilson. RoseMary, Austin and Gemma Trask visited the Kenny Wilsons Sunday afternoon.

A casual inspection of the ESN will reveal that Elm Springs has Matt Trask back for good, and like a king in a cowboy hat, he spent the week in a triumphant homecoming procession from house to house. His unwitting “subjects” have all been very gracious so far. In addition to the exploits mentioned elsewhere, he went to the blood drive in Union Center Monday, where he allowed his friend Andrea Neumann to draw a pint of blood before he ate a pound of cookies, and ate more cookies at the Kenny Wilson residence Wednesday afternoon. In addition to Ben and Andy Linn, Sean Troxel visited the Matt Trask residence Friday night.

Jim Wilsey and his sister Carol went to Hot Springs Monday to visit their brother Howard. Jim and Caroline attended the Stock Show both Friday and Saturday.

Philip Wilson went to Rapid City Wednesday, where he was successful in obtaining his motorcycle drivers’ license. Mary Kay’s brother Monte Harer and wife Lori of Hoven were visitors at the Philip Wilsons Sunday night.

Shirrise Linn invites everyone to the Cheryl Simons benefit get-together at the Community Center in Union Center, starting at 4:30 pm on Sunday, the 12th of February, with a chili and chicken noodle soup feed and a benefit rifle raffle, which also serves as an amusing linguistic exercise.

The kind citizens wish Ryan Elshere the best of luck at the Stock Show rodeo Friday night.

The kind citizens enjoyed yet another week of gloriously warm days, which is not something to complain about.

Many of the kind citizens attended the funeral of Vicki Matt Monday at the community center in Union Center.

“All of the Anders,” says Carolyn, joined the Sam Johnstons in Wall Tuesday night when the Wall junior Eagles played basketball against Kadoka. The Eagles, including Calder Johnston and Dunbar Anders, won. Marvin and Carolyn Anders spent Saturday at the Casey Trask residence. And Marvin and Carolyn played cards at the Rod Anders residence Sunday afternoon.

Friday Morris and Andy Linn and Clyde Arneson accompanied Lonnie Arneson to the Hugh Ingalls ranch to look at bulls.

In addition to the Friday visit, Clyde went to the Cary Tines residence Saturday, where he and Cary worked on “New Blue,” he was accompanied by Connie to the Lawrence Burke residence Sunday morning, and entertained Kody DeVries Sunday afternoon.

Lawrence Burke visited Jack Gravatt Monday.

Kody DeVries visited the Robert Dennis residence Wednesday.

Ryan and Carter Elshere met Cory and Trey Elshere in Rapid City Saturday, where they all attended the Motocross event.

Robert Campbell and family of Macintosh visited the Andy Linn residence over the weekend.

Matt Trask visited the Morris Linn residence Monday night. Tuesday Cheryl Simons got out of the hospital and she is once again staying with the Linns. Morris and Clyde took Kassandra to piano lessons in Wall Thursday, visiting at the Sanden Simons residence as well. Arlene Talley and Dayton Shannon visited the Linns on Sunday afternoon.

Bud Pauley and girls went to Miles City, MT over the weekend to visit Jan Pauley. On the way, they stopped in Newell to watch cousin Trinity Till and the Harding County Lady Ranchers play basketball against the Lady Irrigators.

The “Upland Trasks” had a big week. Brian Herr of Newton, WI, arrived Tuesday. Wednesday, Al returned from Columbus OH, just as Nick and Brian were leaving to join Steph and Julie at the R-CALF Convention in Denver. Pat left Thursday for WI. John Paul and Joseph Trask each won their weight division and helped the Wall wrestling team win the Newell Invitational over the weekend. Nick and Brian returned from Denver Sunday afternoon.

Matt Trask retired from prairie dog poisoning on Saturday. Saturday afternoon, he went to Rapid City where he joined Matt Kelly and Amanda O’dea in an unsuccessfull attempt to see the Johnny Cash movie “Walk the Line.”

The Wilson news is the same for both households, that is, they attended the Wall gymnastics tournament on Tuesday night and the funeral of Steve Kroetch in Philip on Saturday.

The “winter doldrums” have made themselves at home in Elm Springs, even while the weather insists on being spring-like most days.

The People Who Play Cards met at the Kenny Wilson residence Wednesday for their January game. Lawrence Burke and Larry Gravatt had the same high score at the end of the night, and Larry Gravatt won the coin-toss to become January’s winner.

Several kind citizens attended either the Don Trigg funeral in Sturgis or the burial at the National Cemetery Friday.

It was hoped that the couple would report this directly to the ESN, but since they did not, and since Friday they hosted a chivaree party at their home, it should be noted that Rod Anders was recently married to Kelly Thompson during a trip to Hawaii. The Friday party was well attended.

In other wedding news, the exact date of the Al Trask/Bridget Madrid wedding is once again up in the air. Subsequent reschedulings will not be reported in the ESN until there is a level of certainty in the matter.

Lawrence Burke was a coffee visitor at the Clyde Arneson residence Monday morning. Friday, he and Doris went to Rapid City to keep appointments, meeting Melissa Burke for lunch.

In addition to hosting Lawrence Burke Monday morning, Clyde Arneson went to Sturgis Thursday on business, had supper at the Lonnie Arneson residence Friday night and breakfast there Saturday morning, and was the lone visitor to the Matt Trask residence Sunday morning.

Ryan Elshere, accompanied by Billy Martin, left Wednesday for Odessa, TX, where he competed in a rodeo and also visited Cinnamon Johnston, who is going to college there. While he was gone, the Billy Eastman family visited at the Elshere residence over the weekend. The Eastmans and the Elsheres also went to the Lonnie Arneson residence for supper and breakfast. Sunday, Chrissy and kids attended young Tabor Omans birthday party in Rapid City at the Ramkota Hotel.

Some of the Andy Linn children went to play at the Sam Johnston residence, and some of the Sam Johnston children went to play at the Andy Linn residence Sunday afternoon, before the Sam Johnstons visited the Andy Linns to visit and presumably sort children.

Cary and Pam Tines entertained John and Ty Tines, Amanda Humphrey, JW and Dara Wrachford, Sean Troxel, Kody DeVries, and Matt Trask Sunday night.

Shirrise Linn went visited Jack and Cheryl Simons Tuesday. Wednesday, she visited the Cliff Matt family. Chuck and Sandy Van Vleck were visitors at the Morris Linns Friday, staying all night. Saturday, Shirrise visited her mom, who is in the hospital in Sturgis with pneumonia. And Sunday, Shirrise attended the Vicki Matt Memorial before visiting her mom again.

The “Upland Trasks” had a rather slow week, if you don’t count the fact that Al Trask left for Columbus OH again on Friday. John Paul and Joe Trask participated in the Philip wrestling tournament and were cheered on by RoseMary, Austin, and Celine on Friday and Pat on Saturday. Visitors for the week included Ray Olsen and Morris and Andy Linn.

Julie Trask accompanied Matt Trask to the Brad Paisley concert Friday night, where Matt stood in awe, forgetting even food, as Mr. Paisley coaxed manic country licks from a succession of ever prettier Telecaster guitars and Dr. Z amplifiers. And Joe Trask accompanied Matt to the Wasta Centennial Committee meeting on Sunday, where Matt behaved more like himself. After the meeting, Matt and Joe visited briefly at the Tammy Green residence.

Jim Wilsey and Carol Price went to Hot Springs Friday to visit their brother Howard. Saturday, Jim and Caroline had supper at the Bud Pauley residence.

Kenny and Janet Wilson went to Newcastle WY Saturday, where they visited Tyler Wilson and Jack and Phyliss Curtis. Sunday, they had lunch at the Audrey Weiser residence in Owanka.

Philip Wilson went to Hot Springs Tuesday, to watch Pam Wilson and the other Lady Eagles do very well at the gymnastics tournament. On Saturday, Philip and Mary Kay helped Patrick move to a new place in Rapid City.

Melvin and Dorothy Anderson met their Make A Wish girl, Krystyna Nible and her mother for lunch Friday. Saturday, they attended the V-E Grazing Association Reunion at a place called Whitlock crossing before visiting relatives in Linton, ND.

The kind citizens would like to offer their sympathies to the Cliff Matt family.

The past week in Elm Springs was gloriously warm and muddy, until Sunday when it got rather chilly.

The Elm Springs schoolchildren, after undoubtedly breaking at least half of their new toys, trudged back to school on Tuesday.

Several of the kind citizens attended the ice cream social in Wasta on Saturday, to kick off the year-long celebration of Wasta’s centennial.

Rod and Baxter Anders took advantage of the warm weather on Saturday to hook up their team and wagon and take a drive to the O’Rourke residence, where they picked up drinking water and gave the O’Rourke children a ride.

On Monday, Andy Linn accompanied Clyde Arneson to Philip on business. Tuesday, great uncle Clyde drove young Carter Elshere to school, picking him up in the afternoon and entertaining him until his mother came to get him.

Rich Blair of Sturgis was an afternoon visitor at the Lonnie Arneson residence on Sunday.

Skyler Burke and his friend Ryan Timme of Rapid City stayed last Sunday night at the Lawrence Burke residence before going deer hunting with muzzleloading rifles Monday. Lawrence visited Russell Burmeister in Wasta Thursday afternoon, and Lawrence and Doris went to Sturgis Friday on business.

Kody DeVries and Robert Dennis went to Deadwood Friday night. Sunday, Kody took a horse to the horse sale in St. Onge.

Ryan and Chrissy Elshere returned Thursday from Nashville, TN, where along with Sam and Cary Johnston, they had met with Dave Mathison for an enjoyable New Year’s celebration. On Saturday the Elshere’s entertained Jacob Linn before visiting at the Sam Johnston residence in the evening.

Sam and Cary Johnston obviously returned from Nashville on Tuesday and entertained the Elshere’s on Saturday evening. They also entertained Matt Trask Saturday evening. In other Johnston news, young Calder has begun basketball practice with the Wall junior high Eagles.

John and Jean Linn visited Charlotte Wilsey and girls in Rapid City Thursday. The Wilsey’s are eagerly awaiting the return of Brett sometime in February.

Sheryll Oberlander and her kids were visitors to the Morris Linns Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, Shirrise took her mom home to stay, but not before extracting a solemn promise from Cheryl that she would not work too hard. Shirrise then visited Misti and Statler Walker in Union Center. On Wednesday, Shirrise and Kassandra went to Rapid City where they visited Grandma Arlene. Nick Trask was a visitor on Thursday. Andy Linn and Gene Pluth were visitors on Friday, with Gene staying overnight. Matt Trask was a visitor Saturday night. Shirrise hosted a very large stamp party on Sunday near Red Owl, and Matt Trask was once again a visitor Sunday night.

On Tuesday, Bunny Pauley took Mayzee to Rapid City for a doctors appointment. Jesse Bail spent Tuesday night at the Pauley residence. Tucker O’Rourke was a guest at the Pauleys both Thursday and Friday, while his brother Jace was a guest on Friday only. And Jim and Caroline Wilsey were afternoon visitors at the Pauley’s.

Matt Trask and Tracy Kluck were visitors at the Cary Tines residence Wednesday night. Saturday, Cary and Pam attended the funeral of Pam’s cousin Benjamin Eiden near Minneapolis, MN.

The “Upland Trasks” had a fairly busy week. Pat and Nick attended a Farmers Union meeting in Union Center Wednesday night. Pat met with Alan Aker in Rapid City Thursday night. RoseMary took Maria to the clinic in Wall Friday afternoon. Saturday visitors to the “Upland Trasks” were Mr. And Mrs Dean Reeves and a Mrs. O’Leary, all of Eagle Butte, and Drs. Soderstrom and Zimmerman of Rapid City. Pat and RoseMary Trask were visitors to the Andy Linns Sunday morning, Pat on foot and RoseMary in the van.

Morris Linn was the lone visitor at the Matt Trask residence during the week. He stopped Thursday morning for coffee, and left after getting nothing more than boring conversation.

Kenny, Janet, Kelli and Philip Wilson all attended the Wall Eagles boys basketball game Saturday night in Wall.

Kenny and Janet Wilson went to Philip (SD) on Sunday.

Melvin and Dorothy Anderson returned from a wedding in Minnesota the first part of the week. Matt Trask was a visitor to the Melvin Anderson residence Thursday night. Saturday night, Melvin and Dorothy attended the fundraiser for Ms. Rodeo South Dakota 2006, the lovely Sorel McKay.

As you can see, this week’s ESN, while taking up a lot of space, is not terribly interesting.

Oh well, the kind citizens wish you another warm and muddy week.
