The kind citizens of Elm Springs were enchanted Wednesday night and all day Thursday by a soothing, steady rain, which worked magically to wash away the worries, at least for a day. Elm Springs received over an inch of moisture, which was less than that received in some other places, but the kind citizens are in no mood to begrudge anyone.
The Elm Springs schoolchildren participated in the Meade 46-1 Spelling Bee in Union Center Monday. Perhaps inspired by Matt Trask, who in addition to his prowess with a knife and fork, is also a noted speller, they did very well indeed.
Several of the kind citizens attended the Cammack Ranch Supply Open House in Union Center Thursday and Friday.
Matt Trask was a visitor at the Melvin and Dorothy Anderson residence Wednesday afternoon, where he correctly spelled “cookie” and “waffle,” and for his troubles received several of each.
Carolyn Anders returned home Sunday from her trip to Branson, MO with Ken and Belva Riley and Twila Trask, as reported in last week’s ESN. This group visited Biloxi, MS as well as Branson.
Lawrence and Doris Burke helped daughter Melissa move across Rapid City Wednesday.
Ryan and Chrissy Elshere and the rest of the Rodeo Kids went to the rodeo at the Seven Downs Arena near Spearfish Saturday night. The Rodeo Kids did very well.
Chrissy Elshere has been busy of late, making preparations for her move into Dimensions hair salon in Rapid City, with former kind citizen Mandy Wilson. The two will be open for business May 10th.
Kellie Linn attended a supper and speaker function at the Union Center Church Thursday night. On Saturday she attended a nutrition seminar in Rapid City.
The Morris Linns had more fun with Simons’s over the week, with Bummer once again visiting on Monday. Shirrise and Kassandra went to Rapid City to welcome Grandma Arlene home from Arizona. They had lunch with Misti and Statler Walker. Matt Trask was a visitor Monday, probably not to help with spelling. On Wednesday Clyde was a supper guest. Clyde was a dinner guest Thursday as well, and the Sam Johnstons and Ryan Elsheres were supper guests. On Friday, dear Uncle Jim Linn visited the Morris Linns to ready Kassandra’s bicycle for summer adventures.
And on Saturday, what had originally been a small celebration of young Kassandra’s seventh birthday quickly exploded into a full scale extravaganza. The guest list included Ashlyn and Jared Simons, Carter Elshere, Savana Johnston, Andy Linn and children, John, Jean and Jim Linn, Sheryll and Alyssa Oberlander, Misti and Statler Walker, and the Brett Wilseys. The day began at the Morris Linn residence and moved to the Community Center in Union Center for roller skating. Sheryll and Alyssa Oberlander were supper guests at the Morris Linns. Sunday, Ashlyn and Jared visited in the afternoon, and Bummer and Scott Simons were supper guests at the Morris Linns.
Maxine Smith returned home Thursday from her trip to Washington DC, where she accompanied daughter Leslie Brown to the Rural Water Ralley. Maxine enjoyed the sights in DC, and got to see the golden berite from the Smith Ranch, on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
The biggest news of the week at the “Upland Trasks” was RoseMary’s trip to Riverton, WY, accompanied by Maria and Celine. They left for Riverton after the Special Olympics in Sturgis, in which Maria did well. In Riverton they visited Becky, returning her car, visited the grave of Sacagewea, and went for a ride in a hot air balloon, returning Sunday. Matt Trask and a cow visited the Bruch ranch near Stoneville Monday. Pat and Matt attended a Meade County Farm Bureau meeting at the Ken and Anita Lee residence in Hereford Saturday night. It should be noted that Jim Smith attended this same meeting. Visitors included Mike Finnegan of Rapid City, several Tines, Sean Troxel, and several others.
Cary and Pam Tines hosted John Tines and Amanda Humphrey one night for supper, and Clyde Arneson several mornings for coffee. Sunday night, Cary and Pam celebrated their wedding anniversary with supper at Red Lobster in Rapid City.
Les Larsen and Bob Kelly, both of Rapid City, were visitors at the Jim and Caroline Wilsey residence Monday and Sunday.
Mary Kay Wilson left Sunday for Sioux Falls, where she accompanied the Wall FCCLA girls to the State FCCLA convention.
Matt Trask was a visitor at the “Brustol AFB” Friday afternoon.
The Elm Springs Church schedule for the month of May is as follows: services will be held on the 1st, the 15th, and the 22nd, at 2 pm and the Memorial Day Program is the 30th of May, also at 2.
There has never been a preview of next weeks news in the ESN, but it should be noted that the kind citizens have made plans to move everything they can lift, and maybe some things they can’t, next week. It promises to be an exciting week in and around Elm Springs, and you can catch all the hernia-popping action right here in the ESN.

The Elm Springs News
The temperature in Elm Springs has reached alarming highs over the past week, and the wind has blown rather steadily during the daylight hours. The kind citizens of Elm Springs are enjoying the beautiful sunshiny days, even while applying sunscreen with one hand and holding their hats with the other.
As this is the turkey season, Elm Springs has been beset with camouflage-garbed, shotgun-wielding outdoorsmen and women.
The talented schoolchildren of Elm Springs particpated in the Civic Oration Contest at the Alkali School Friday. Kelli Wilson placed 2nd, Calder Johnston placed 3rd, and all of the children did a wonderful job.
Several of the kind citizens attended the Catalyst Club’s Good Neighbor Banquet in Rapid City on Friday. This years honorees were Loyd and Margee Willey from everyone’s favorite town of Wasta, Linda Eisenbraun from Wall, and Norma Simon from the somewhat less glamorous but very charming community of Owanka. As this was the 25th anniversary of the Good Neighbor Banquet, all past honorees were recognized, including kind citizens Jean Linn and the late Winnie Trask. Vocalist for the evening was Terry Trask Karrels.
Carolyn Anders, accompanied by Ken and Belva Riley and Twila Trask, left Friday for Branson Missouri.
Clyde Arneson accompanied the younger Linn brothers to the Baker Bull Sale on Monday and the Trask/Shearer Bull Sale on Wednesday. He hosted Morris Linn and Bummer Simons at his house several days this week, and Nick Trask once. And Sunday, he accompanied Cary and Pam Tines to Wasta, where they were met by Connie Arneson before attending an antique auction in Philip.
Lawrence and Doris Burke went to Rapid City Saturday, where Lawrence participated in a showcase reading of his book, “Hank Sez… Cartoons and Lies” at the Prince and Pauper Bookstore.
Jack Gravatt’s sister Dora Mae Jensen of Wall, and her son Gail of California, visited Gravatt Ranches Sunday.
Big Sam Johnston attended a South Dakota Ag and Rural Leadership seminar in Rapid City Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, as part of the seminar, the SDARL crew toured the Sam Johnston ranch.
Saturday, Kelli, Emily and Jacog Linn went to Rapid City to go bowling with the Jolly Ranchers 4-H Club.
And Sunday, the Andy Linns had lunch at Wall Drug before going to the Burt Dartt residence to buy ten little pigs.
Matt Trask was a visitor at the Morris Linns Monday. On Thursday, Grandma Jean accompanied Shirrise and Kassandra to Rapid City for errands. Friday Sandy Van Vleck and Bummer Simons were visitors at the Morris Linns. On Saturday, Shirrise and Kassandra attended a party at the Bummer Simons residence in Enning before visiting at the Jack and Cheryl Simons residence. Bummer, meanwhile, was at the Morris Linn residence, where he spent the night. On Sunday, the inseparable Morris and Bummer, joined by Sanden Simons, quite successfully went fishing, while the inseparable Shirrise and Kassandra, joined by Misti Walker, attended yet another party, this one at the home of Kaye Andrews, before visiting even more Simons, namely Scott and Lynn. The week was ended at the Morris Linn residence in the company of the ubiquitous Bummer and Matt, Nick and Al Trask.
Bunny Pauley stayed with a friend in Custer Tuesday and Wednesday.
Cary Tines hosted Morris Linn and Bummer Simons Saturday night.
Matt, Steph and Julie Trask were visitors at the John Tines residence Saturday night. Sunday, John, Amanda Humphrey, Billie Gene Pippert and Kody Devries all went to Rapid City Grocery shopping.
The “Elk Creek Trasks” had a somber week, with the Fred McDaniels funeral in Philip on Monday, and the Jerry Young funeral in Pierre on Wednesday. Mark Trask left Friday for the FFA Convention in Brookings, and Bob McDaniels was a visitor to the “Elk Creek Trasks” on Sunday.
The “Upland Trasks” hosted representatives from the Flame Engineering Corp. of Lacrosse, KS Thursday and Friday, for a demonstration of their “Alfalfa Flamer” product. The demo, which was attended by Richard Johnston and Dale Keyser of Wall, was originally slated for Thursday, but the merry breezes postponed the event until Friday. Pat took alfalfa seed to eastern South Dakota over the weekend.
Mary Kay and Pam Wilson attended track meets Friday and Saturday, in Rapid City and Belle Fourche, in which Pam participated. Patrick Wilson was out over the weekend.
The kind citizens of Elm Springs advise you to wear a ratty hat, the kind you do not care for, until the wind blows over.

The kind citizens capped a beautiful week by celebrating the risen Savior on a gorgeous Easter Sunday. It truly was a week of dazzling weather here in Elm Springs.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders hosted Easter dinner with the Rod Anders, the Casey Trasks, Larry and Chris Insley of Creighton and Jo Strong of Union Center.
Clyde Arneson accompanied Morris and Andy Linn to the Baker Bull Sale near Belle Fourche on Monday and then accompanied Andy and Morris to the Trask/Shearer Bull Sale near Creighton on Wednesday.
Lawrence and Doris Burke had Easter dinner in Wall.
Matt Trask did his Guitar for Food thing again at the Ryan Elshere residence Tuesday night. Sunday, the Ryan Elshere’s joined the Elshere family for Easter dinner at the Paul and Joy Elshere residence.
Lynn and Sandy Fields hosted daughter Heather and Rob Langley and family over the Easter weekend.
Peggy Gravatt left Friday for Minneapolis, MN to see her dad and sister. Jack and Larry went to the Byron and Cherry Denke residence for Easter dinner.
Matt Trask also did his Guitar for Food thing at the Andy Linn residence Thursday night. Friday, Kellie Linn accompanied Carrie Johnston to a 40th birthday party for Jody Moreland at the bed and breakfast near Opal. And the Andy Linns were once again visited by Matt Trask on Sunday night, who was out of chewing tobacco.
John and Jean Linn hosted Brett and Charlotte Wilsey and girls and Charlie and Carol Linn over the Easter weekend and the above plus Morris and Kassandra and the Andy Linns for Easter dinner.
Shirrise Linn was gone all week with her mother in Rochester MN. Poor Morris did his best in her absence.
The Brady O’Rourkes hosted the Bud Pauleys for Easter dinner and an afternoon of fun and games Sunday.
And the Bud Pauleys attended the horse races in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.
Matt Trask was a guest of the Cary Tines’ several days in a row. John and Ty Tines and Amanda Humphrey were supper guests at the Cary Tines residence Saturday night, and the Tines’ joined their extended family at the Kay Williams residence in New Underwood for Easter dinner.
Robert, Kylee and Kaleb Shape of Belle Fourche were visitors to the “Upland Trasks” Thursday morning. Patrick Wilson accompanied Al Trask and his truck to Minnesota over the weekend. The “Upland Trasks” celebrated Easter with Ray Olsen and Joe and Iola Carter of Custer.
And the Little Boys revived the Easter Camping Trip started by the Big Boys several years ago. Easter Campers, besides the Little Boys, were Coby Tines, Baxter and Dunny Anders, Jace Shearer of Wall, Kyle Barber of Owanka, and Colton Derr of New Underwood.
Jim and Caroline Wilsey met the Kent Wilsey family of Oklahoma City, OK, in Grand Island, NE where they spent the weekend.
Kenny and Janet Wilson hosted the Philip Wilsons, the Bruce Kroetch’s, the Kevin Howlands, the Tucky Tifts, and the Steve Daly’s for Easter dinner.
JW and Dara Wrachford attended the Easter get-together at the Kay Williams residence Sunday.
Melvin and Dorothy Anderson visited Melvins sister Betty Schrempp at her home near Eagle Butte Friday. Sunday, they had dinner at the Audey Anderson residence near Opal before going to visit Betty again.

The Elm Springs News
Now that the time has changed, the kind citizens of Elm Springs are enjoying the long and very beautiful afternoons. As always, a rainy afternoon would be the most beautiful of all, but sunny afternoons are nice too.
The Elm Springs Church hosted musical pastor Dan Kent and his wife Laurie Sunday, who performed service in song, to a packed House.
Several of the kind citizens went to Wall Saturday night to watch the Wall High School Prom grand march. Promgoers from Elm Springs included young John Paul Trask, escorting Ms Tara Sutter of Wall, young Baxter Anders, escorting Ms Amy Jobgen of Scenic, and Ms Pam Wilson, escorted by young Tyler Wulf of Owanka.
Marvin and Carolyn Anders went to Rapid City Friday.
Lawrence and Doris Burke had lunch with daughter Melissa in Rapid City Tuesday. Wednesday, Clyde Arneson was a visitor at the Burke residence. And Saturday Lawrence went to the gun show in Rapid City.
Lynn and Sandy Fields have done nothing of note socially in the last week, but they do have a new hired man, a native kind citizens even, John Tines. John moved back to Elm Springs to begin his employment with the Fields Sunday, and Elm Springs is glad to have him back.
Kelli Linn left Thursday for Loveland CO where she and Liz Anderson of Hill City attended the National Quantum Energetics Conference.
Young Kassandra Linn began gymnastics Tuesday in Wall with the Johnstons and the Pauleys. After practice, they all went to the Big Green Trask House to wish Twila Trask a happy birthday. Wednesday, Grandma Jean took Kassandra to her piano lesson, as Shirrise was hosting Jen and Cameron Magee and Jen’s parents Walt and Shirley Stone, all of Wyoming. Friday, the Morris Linns took delivery of a new dining room table, which Pat and Al Trask were gracious enough to help move. Pat returned home, while Al stayed for dinner. In the afternoon, Al returned, bringing his brothers, who helped move the old table out and then stayed for supper. Sunday Shirrise dropped Kassandra off at Jack and Cheryl Simons while she attended a stamp party at the Vivian Miller residence near Red Owl.
The always hilarious Bud Pauley reports that he was saved twice on Bunny’s birthday Saturday, first by Darlene Wulf of Owanka, who invited the Pauleys to breakfast and relieved Bud from having to cook breakfast, and then by kind citizen Caroline Wilsey, who brought over a birthday cake and relieved the rest of the Pauley’s from having to eat the cake Bud had made.
The inhabitants of the Cary Tines residence were largely preoccupied with helping young John move. Friday, Pam, Dara Wrachford, Amanda Humphrey and Gene Pippert attendeded a Silpada party at the Delynn Willis residence in New Underwood. Saturday, Pam, Dara, and Amanda, Billy and Kate Humphrey had a “cleaning party” at the New Underwood Tines residence. And Sunday was the actual move. Helpers included, with thanks from John, the Tines family, Kody DeVries, Dara Wrachford, and Tad and Tucker Northup. Sunday visitors at the Cary Tines residence included Natalie Termes, Kay Williamson, Joan Racicky, Tad Northup and Matt, Nick and Al Trask.
The “Upland Trasks” week revolved around young John Paul Trask, who was confirmed in the Catholic Church Wednesday at New Underwood. John Pauls sponsor was Kenny Wilson. Visitors over the week included Brian Barber of Rapid City, Pastor Charles Roesel of Florida, Coby and Clay Tines, Sean Troxel, Chad Kaltenbach, Buzz and Brent Johnson, Craig Painter, and a host of others. Matt Trask visited the “Brustol AFB” Wednesday, the Big Green Trask House Saturday, and the Larry Schell residence Sunday. He also stopped to talk to the “Gunns of Wall,” who were all congregated in Wasta Sunday.
Dara Wrachford, after several weeks recuperation from surgery, returned to work Tuesday at Ellsworth AFB.
The Catalyst Club is holding their 25th annual Good Neighbor banquet on Friday, April 15th, in the Lacroix Hall of the Rapid City Civic Center. In addition to this years honorees, all past honorees will be recognized. Tickets for this event can be obtained at the Civic Center or at Ann’s Flowers in Wall.
